WiFi range

Fri Jan 28, 2022 7:08 pm

Hi,
I'm new in this forum, but I was reading already a lot in this forum and also external e.g. using google.
Probably it was discussed already and I was just using the wrong search patterns, but after searching for several days I would really appreciate your help.
Following situation:
I have an RB941-2nD with really bad coverage/wifi range. I found a lot information about Tx Power and antenna gain. Since the sum of antenna gain and tx power (in dBm) is not allowed to exceed a certain value, I'm wondering if a different AP with an antenna having a higher gain could increase the wifi coverage (since I would have to reduce the Tx power when using a "better" antenna).
Could someone explain that to me or provide some information source?

The TX-power can be limited by the EIRP regulation. It is more the case in Europe (ETSI / 20dBm) than in USA/Canada (FCC / 30dBm)
The real "gain" in coverage comes from the fact that the antenna amplifies the received signal (just as it does with the sent signal), and makes the receiving more sensitive. You "hear" the client from further away.
