Wireless disconnects frequently

Thu Dec 30, 2021 11:40 am

Hi all,

I have a site to set up with wifi, but we got frequent drops, so I took a very basic setup home and was able to reproduce the issue.

So I have a hAP ac lite and a mAP lite here set up as a very basic CAPsMAN configuration:

(yes, we have true residential 10GBit Fiber connections ;) )

The hAP has been reset with basic config (NOT with "no config"). After that, I followed this tutorial: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:S ... sMAN_setup (with the hAP as router and wifi disabled, just as illustrated in the tutorial)

It basically works, but I get very frequent drops on the Wifi (making it almost unusable) and I cannot figure out why.
When connected via LAN to hAP: (so that issues with the hAP can be eliminated)

When connected via WLAN to mAP: (test conduceted RIGHT NEXT to the mAP, so distance as a root cause can be eliminated)

What are the steps to debug such a situation?

Check (error)counters, logs and status in the chain of connections. Nobody can guess which link in the chain is failing.

Yes distance can be eliminated, if you are not too close. But this is not enough to have a usable wifi connection. Any other transmitter can silence the mAP or your device, just by using all the airtime.

-check the logs
-check all ethernet ports (error, speed handshake)
-non-twisted cable in ether3 should be avoided (disconnect if not part of the test). Grey cable from modem, and yellow cable to mAP look OK
-analyse all values in the "Registration table" for the wifi link.
-scan the wifi environment with "Freq Usage" and "Snooper"
-eliminate CAPsMAN for the wifi test
-enable wifi logging ( /system logging topics=wireless)
-check or post config on forum ("export hide-sensitive file=yourfilename")

Hi

Thanks for some inputs on what to check - I did quite a bit of testing by now and would like to give a short heads-up:
The issue was another device (router) in the network. I am still unable to understand why this caused multiple Mikrotik Routers to malfunction in that combination (router from other vendors worked just fine in that combination).
To be fair, the issue-causing router (a Genexis EG400 Rev. 1) had some sort of beta firmware flashed.

After removal of that device from the network, it seems that it all runs as expected.

Cheers
