Original problem showed intermittent high ping response times (>300mS).
Further investigation shows some unexpected behaviour with the MikroTik device. It appears there may(?) be some regular blocking within router. It could explain the >300mS ping times.
It would be really helpful to understand why I am seeing the >300mS ping times. What could explain the blocking? How could we configure MikroTik AP device to behave better?
Here's more details about the test & findings.
Test
1. Mikrotik hAP ac3 (Model RBD53iG-5HacD2HnD), setup with out-the-box vanilla configuration as Dual-band AP.
2. Linux laptop setup next to Mikrotik AP.
3. Laptop is only device connecting to AP.
4. High volume ping command run continuously, directly to AP IP address:

In summary:
- Regularly every 10 or 20 seconds there is a large spike in max response time, often >300mS.
- Other response times are good.
