CRS305-1G-4S+IN with 1Gbps PPPoE - will it be fast enough?

Mon Mar 21, 2022 4:55 pm

Hi all,

I am considering a CRS305-1G-4S+IN to act as a router between a WAN port running PPPoE at 1Gbps, and the rest of the ports switched together.

Will this router be fast enough to handle some modest routing, including IP masquerading and some basic filter rules at 1Gbps through the WAN port?

The specs suggest this might be borderline, can anyone confirm some real work experience?

Regards,
Graham

No. Not by a long shot. A rough estimate of real-world performance of a given MT router is the '25 IP filter rules' test results with 512 byte packets. For the CRS305 that's 270Mbps (https://mikrotik.com/product/crs305_1g_ ... estresults). And that's without the added load of PPPoE handling. No CRS (which are switches first, and routers a distant second, when not running L3 HW offloading) will have the CPU grunt to do what you need. If you didn't need PPPoE, a CRS309 with L3 hardware offloading would be able to handle it easily, but that can't do PPPoE at that rate either.

I'd look at a RB4011 or RB5009 to do the routing, and leave the CRS305 to do the switching.
