RB5009 Slower at 2.5Gbps than 1Gbps

Mon Jan 03, 2022 9:07 pm

I just installed a new RB5009 (OS 7.1.1) at home. The 2.5Gbps port is connected to the 2.5Gbps port on a Motorola SB8611 cable modem using a Cat 5e cable. I have 1.2Gbps Internet service from my ISP (Comcast). After installing the RB5009, I'm only seeing about 570Mbps Internet download speeds with the default port configuration (2.5Gbps link). If I remove the 2.5Gbps advertisement on that port, then the router will connect to the cable modem at 1Gbps and my Internet download speeds will increase to about 950Mbps. Are there any known issues or incompatibilities with the 2.5Gbps port on this router? Any setting I should change to try to get higher download speeds? I upgraded from a hEX S to this new router, partly because of the 2.5Gbps port, but I get slower download speeds than the hEX S unless I disable 2.5Gbps connections to the modem.

It seems that others are also having some issues with the 2.5Gbps port:

I can confirm this issue. Exact same setup as OP. Comcast 1.2Gbps, MB8611.

It doesn't seem like the issue lies in the modem>router connection. If I connect a 10Gbps uplink from a switch into the sfp+ port instead I get full speed and no issues so the issue seems to be passing the data from the 2.5G port to the 1G ports. This would make it seem like a flow control issue but changing that doesn't seem to help either, just seems like a poor implementation of 2.5Gbps I guess?

Would be great if Mikrotik would respond to support requests on the issue but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I have exactly the same problem. All my cabling done with factory made Cat 6a cables. Sagemcom F@st 3896U cable modem (I use it in a bridge mode) has one 2.5G port and three 1G ports. I have 2G internet connection. Tested with two Samsung s21 phones and 1G NIC wired PC (ASUS x570 pro, AMD Ryzen 9, 64Gb RAM, 2TB SSD) Combined speed on all three (using speedtest of ISP) was close to 2GB.
I've got Mikrotik RB5009 (updated to 7.1.1) to be able to use its 2.5G port and four of its 1G ports as a LACP team to utilize 2G internet on all my wired devices.
I can get only 230Mbits (connection is 2.5G full) unless I remove 2.5G full advertisement on 1eth port (connection - 1G full), then I get 990 Mbits speed, or same result if I use 2.5G port on RB5009 and 1G port on the cable modem (connection 1G full)
So, what is the problem: Switch 2.5G port or Modem 2.5G port?
For the experiment I've got 2.5GBase-T PCI Express Gigabit Network Card with Intel I225V controller chip. Installed it into the PC. Directly connected the NIC to 2.5G port of the modem with 15ft Cat6A cable.
ISP speed test web page shows 1910Mbits.

I also had the same issue, the speed of the internet became too much slow while uploading content on my online store. After customer support, i found out the issue, it because of the modem configuration. After modem settings, it working fine
Could you be more specific what modem do you have and what connection speed with 5009 and internet you have?
BTW if you reread the previous posts you will see the issue is not slowing down from normal to slow speed. The issue is in the fact that MikroTik 5009 on the ether1 2.5G port connected to 2.5G port on a modem (or any other computer or switch with 2.5G, full duplex) gives maximum download or upload speed 10 to 5 times less than 2.5G port should. And only known solution today is to remove 2.5G advertisement out of ether1 and use this port as 1G only. As 1G it is working as normal 1G port, but people bought this router to use it as advertised: ether1 is 2.5G. This is what I ask Mikrotik: either fix the problem or give me a return authorization. I already have 1G edgeRouter for $40. Do not need 1G router for $200

Running 7.2rc5 my 10G hosts are doing well, 2.3Gbps bidirectional on my 2Gbps over-provisioned AT&T link.

However, my 1G hosts are doing about 780Mbps down, and 950Mbps up. Not sure why the download is impacted. Happens on many hosts, and even with /interface/ethernet/switch/set 0 cpu-flow-control=no. May be my ISP fault (even though I can get up to 2.3Gbps), researching...

Either way a huge improvement.

UPDATE: In general, my 1G speeds are lower. 780-800-ish Mbps, and I'm pretty sure this is due to the upgrade. Uploads are not impacted.

There was 4 test firmware (V1, V2, V3 and V4) In my tests V1 gave best download speed, V4 was slowest. Looks like rc5 is V4, maybe V3.
