Question about IoT connection to other devices

Thu Apr 21, 2022 2:24 am

Hey, it's me again.. :D

Quick question (I hope): How should I build my IoT network in order for it to work both good and safe with my other devices? I asked around and every person I talked to says "VLANS. Separate your IoT devices from the rest of the network and You should be good." Seems simple. But the thing is my IoT devices need to talk to my other devices in real time and not every IoT device I use has some cloud connection. Some of them need to be connected inside LAN. What should I do? Separate everything I can and leave everything else inside the same VLAN? Or is there any other way around it?

Quick question my a** :D

Re: Question about IoT connection to other devices

I have Amazon Alexa / Gogole devices and other IoT devices on same network.
For weeks I am paranoid and analyze any connection between devices and Internet.
I find: nothing.
Do not mind and put all togheter.
If you use one smartphone, you are more spyed than on your IoT network.

Simply, nevermind and put all togheter.

Re: Question about IoT connection to other devices  [SOLVED]

It depends, my cat is more discriminating.

Some things are less likely to be sensitive.
I would not put for example my video camera with all other devices etc.....

THe nice thing about vlans is that you can be specific in the direction of access.
If you put them all on the same LAN then everything is wide open in both directions.

Thus you could give some users that require access to IOT devices on the other vlan, permissions via firewall rules.
There is lots of flexibility there.
Its not a bad idea to get familiar with the concept of using vlans.

Okay then - I'm going with VLANs.
I'm pretty sure this means You Guys are going to be very busy here with me and people I live with very mad.
But what can You do, right? :D
