Real benefits of rRB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN ?

Sat Apr 23, 2022 11:56 pm

Hi
Curently I am using 2 devices hap ac2 and 1 groove all works ok with capsman.
Last weeks I upgraded my internet connection and I thought to buy rRB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN.
But I know I will lost some features:
1. Capsman
2. 2,4GHz when wave2 is enabled (worst thing)
3. N/AC in one setup for wireless interface
4. external antenas seames not to be better than internal ac2
...
benefits
1. performance
2. zero tier

it's not that impressive :-(

you can use CAPsMAN on the 4011 to manage its built-in wireless interfaces. just configure the manager normally, then tell the client to connect to 127.0.0.1 (with appropriate firewall rule).
2. 2,4GHz when wave2 is enabled (worst thing)
can hAP ac2 use wifiwave2 at all? it won't fit on mine since the flash is too small. also, wifiwave2 doesn't work with CAPsMAN anyway.

the 4011 has more GE ports, the SFP+ port (which doesn't exist on hAP ac2 at all), and more RAM and flash space.

we have 2x 4011 and 4x hAP ac2 here and the hAP ac2 would be completely unsuitable to replace the 4011. but it sounds like you're mainly interested in a wireless AP, in which case the 4011 might not be the best value choice - did you consider the hAP ac3 instead?

From the perspective of my network and services RB4011 is a good choice but I have large Iot infrastructure and 2,4 is required.
One of my ac2 must work with 2.4GHz next to RB4011 with enabled wave2 and second ac2 on the ground floor with 2.4/5GHz. +outdoor 2.4GHz groove.
And another issue how to set N/AC wave2 interfejs?
I did not find any better brand on the market with as many configuration options and that why I am stiil with MIkrotik.

When dealing with RB4011 wifi version, there are two choices when it comes to wifi:
  1. use legacy wifi driver. This is only option when running v6 and one of two options when running v7.
    Benefits:
    • supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz
    • supports CAPsMAN client mode
    • supports more configuration options and better observability
    Drawbacks:
    • worse wireless performance in almost all conditions
  2. use wifiwave2 drivers. This option is only available in v7.
    Benefits:
    • better wireless performance
    Drawbacks:
    • requires much more space on flash storage and RAM
    • only supports 5GHz radio on RB4011 (other devices fare differently[*])
    • doesn't support CAPsMAN client mode
    • worse setup and observability

We can hope that with time, most of wave2 driver drawbacks will be overcome this way or another (apart from RAM and flash storage requirements which seem to be harder to crack). Whether we'll see it happen and when is unclear and one should not base purchasing decissions on hypothetical future developments.

[*] I have one audience (RBD25) which is a prime candidate for a very good WAP by Mikrotik: all 3 radios are supported by wifiwave2 driver, has enough RAM and flash storage and behaves overall nicely. The rest of drawbacks ... I can live with them.

I am afraid rRB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN will not be developed in this direction only new designed hardware.

For my enviroment several ac2 located in diferent places always will lbe better than RB4011 with wifi config limitations.
I can use rRB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN only as router. The price difference is not big between rRB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN and RB4011iGS+RM on avarege 40$.
RB5009UG+S+IN same price...

Anyway rRB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN has a lot of fans and is permanently sold out :-/

be aware RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN is hotter than non wifi version

wifi version consumes 5 watt more and that is significant in a passive cooled device like this

operating ambient temperature witness this:

RB4011iGS+RM
Tested ambient temperature -40°C to 70°C

RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN
Tested ambient temperature -40°C to 45°C

I prefer wifi ap separated from main router, integrating all in the same device is a paradigm hard to leave initially but gives you flexibility

RB4011iGS+RM is a very capable router, with the best price/performance ratio off all the product line

That mean I should turn off wifi and use RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN only as router and I will be happy ;)

yes, i have seen rb4011 as BRAS/BGN for up to 700 subscribers on radio (speeds from 5 to 8 mbps each) approx 700 mbps total throughput (at 1800mhz cpu clock 8) )

OK guys I found some misconfiguration as always when I am angry on Mikrotik.
I make some tests and for now is acceptable.

Clients: Dell laptops, Samsung and Xiaomi phones, Lenovo tab 10
Settings: (RB4011.. wave2 5GHz AC, cAP manager), (2x Hap AC2 2.4GHz N - 5GHz AC), (UNIFI UAP-AC-LITE 2.4GHz B G N - 5GHz N A AC)
"unifi for performance comparasion I know lite is a cheep version but more expensive than hap"

Results:
5GHz
RB4011... 600Mbit
hap AC2 350Mbit
UAP-AC-Lite 350Mbit
2.4GHz
hap AC2 100Mbit
UAP-AC-Lite 120Mbit

At the end one interesting thing: Lenovo Tab 10 (2.4GHz/5GHz)
RB4011.. and hapAC2 20-25Mbit extremally unstable
UAP-AC-Lite 40-50Mbit middle unstable

HAP AC2 can do Zerotier.
If you don't use the SFP+ port... The 4011 looses it's edge.

keep in mind rb4011 has 2x-3x the procesing capacity of hap ac2 much more memory and storage
