PPPOE disconnects - UK FTTC

Mon May 16, 2022 12:09 pm

Hi,

All of a sudden having issues with PPPOE connection to my UK ISP. Been working fine for years then last Friday after a power cycle on the equipment it just will not connect. Have raised support ticket with provider and verified no service/account issues. Have checked the router logs and can see that the session authenticates and connects but then immediately disconnects. Have exported a debug log of the PPPOE session which I will paste below as a lot is beyond my understanding so hopefully someone more knowledgeable can shed even a little light or suggested next steps.

Topology wise its a Draytek Vigor 130 modem that is in front of the hEX 750Gr3 router, running ROS 6.49.6. Solid light on the modem so in sync.

As a test I bought a cheap TP-Link combined modem/router and configured. Connected straight away no issues. Which was annoying.

Anyways, hope enough info for assistance.

Thanks as always,

Nell

Complaining about IPv6 not being supported.

Thanks for the reply msatter.

Maybe a stupid question but is that IPv6 not being supported by the Mikrotik? If so is there a setting to correct? Strange how it suddenly doesn't like it anymore.

PPP sessions should be able to reject unsupported control protocols during negotiation without aborting the entire session, certainly it works fine the other way around with an IPv6-enabled Mikrotik connecting to an IPv4-only ISP (Plusnet).

Maybe the ISP or carrier has changed something which only manifests itself now you are trying to reconnect. The MRU values are unusual, what are the mru, mtu and mrru settings on the pppoe-client interface, and which ISP?

BT Wholesale who provide the interconnect from exchanges back to ISP data centres do not officially support RFC 4638, although it works with BT Business, Plusnet and Zen in my experience.

Best hook up the TP-Link and note which IPv6 address is used there. Only need the first four to see what kind of connection it is.

You can switch off IPv6 in the 750Gr3 and see if it then connects.

Thanks for the replies all.

@tdw - Will get the mru, mtu and mrru settings when I can, away at the mo. ISP wise its "Babble".

@msatter - will check IPv6 address when back. At the risk of appearing stupid, how does one switch off IPv6 on the Tik?

Just disable IPv6 in the PPP profile instead of network-wide on your router :-)
/ppp profile
set *0 comment="ipv6 disabled" use-ipv6=no
