New HAP AC2 routers assigning 192.168.101.x addresses , faulty? return them?

Sat Mar 26, 2022 2:03 pm

Hi all, I just bought two HAP AC2 routers to extend my wireless coverage.

I plugged them in and did the double-double pwr button press to get them into CAP mode. They get an IP address from DHCP server but can't connect to them using WinBox or via browser, even though they show up in WinBox, the error is Invalid username / password with admin/<empty> as the password , although I tried a lot of user password combinations. Via browser I get a 'refused to connect' http error. I can ping the IP address and get responses.

So to test, I did the single press factory reset and connect to them via network cable into port 3 and the router assigns me IP address 192.168.101.254 with Default gateway 192.168.101.1 . Try connect to 192.168.101.1 via browser same error , browser says 'refused to connect', but I can ping 192.168.101.1 .

Both routers are doing the same thing? Is it a fault? Should I return them?

Update: I ran nmap and found the web UI is running on https://192.168.101.1:8081, but the admin/<blank> password doesn't work. Invalid username or password

192.168.101.1 is NOT your hAP ac2 , unless it got that IP address somewhere from your DHCP server. 191.168.101.1 is probably your main router/DHCP/DNS server of the LAN.
There is no power button on the hAP ac2 AFAIK.
After factory reset default mode the IP range is 192.168.88.0/24, router has 192.168.88.1, on ether ports 2-5 and on the wireless. Ether1 will accept another IP address from the upstream connection.
With (factory) default ether1 cannot be used to log in.

On ether3 connect with WinBox using the "Neighbors" TAB , and use the MAC address as connection.
Disconnect other cables, and see if the 192.168.101.x assignment disappears.

Also look up the mac address of 191.168.101.1 in your arp table.
it might not be a mikrotik device , you can look the brand associated with the mac address with this site https://macvendors.com
and its likely since it doesn't have a web interface that it's not a mikrotik

A clear case of demonic possession. Nothing can be done. Please send to me (will pay postage) and will attempt an exorcism!

It is possible that your hAP AC2's were preconfigured by a Mikrotik dealer for a wisp or other entity that went under and a reseller acquired them. In this case you may need to try netinstall to reset them. If you bought them from a Mikrotik dealer I would send them back.

I think w32pamela was right, custom firmware for an ISP and someone picked them up cheap when they went bust
