RB4011iGS wifi speed.

Mon May 30, 2022 3:31 pm

Hello!
I want to take RB4011iGS+5HacQ2HnD-IN and connect my NAS by cable to it.
Can anyone answer - Is it possible to reach 500-1000mbps when downloading files from connected by cable NAS through WiFi (RB4011iGS)?
Or should I look on RB5009UG+S+IN with Mikrotik Audience or some NON-Mikrotik WiFi AP?
Thanks a lot for your support.

With the 4011, if you have a 4x4 client in theory the speed should be ~800mbps with a good signal. The Audience also has a 4x4 radio. Keep in mind you'll need the wifiwave2 package to make full use of the radios: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/WifiWave2

If you want faster, you'll need non-Mikrotik APs since there is no 802.11ax products from Mikrotik yet.

Personal opinion:
I wouldn't recommend using Wifi for MASS downloading data from/to NAS. Cable is always more reliable.

Keep in mind you'll need the wifiwave2 package to make full use of the radios: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/WifiWave2
CAVEAT: when applying wifiwave2 package on RB4001, 2.4GHz radio is completely lost. Only 5GHz-channel will be useable then.

What client(s) do you use? Most clients (I know) use 2 streams (2x2 MIMO) and will therefor not reach maximum (theoratical) speed.

According to official documentation wifiwave2 driver supports beam forming (and MU-MIMO which stands for Multi User MIMO). In this case multiple antennae on AP are used to form beams and in case of strategically positioned multiple clients more than one client can be served at the same time. This increases overall throughput of AP but doesn't increase maximum throughput for individual clients. It also improves individual clients' throughputs if signal level is not ideal (due to beam forming, more energy is radiated in approximate direction of client which improves SINR for client).

So yes, if clients are not 4x4, then maximum speed is not achievable.

The maximal raw WiFi bandwidth with ac2 2x2 Mimo is 866MBit/s (2x433). Connection at the theoretical max rate will only work in the same room a few meters away from the RB4011, if it at all.
A room away it will be closer to 200-300MBit raw WiFi rate.
The practical per client TCP bandwidth as measuered with iperf3 or netperf is 30-40% of the raw WiFi rate in a usual environment.
WiFi has a lot ov overhead, the "air" has to be shared with clients more away sending at lower rates, has to be shared with other APs, Bluetooth and micro wave ovens and hence in general has a lot of packet retransmissions and radio pauses.

Can the NAS spit it out that quick?

But as for the Wifi... Nope.

As I understand - NAS has dual lan functionality and in combination with fast HDDs - it will be cool

I have a Macbook pro 15 2019, it is 3x3 mimo as I Understand it.

My main doubt about Mikrotik's wifi - is that it will be way slower than my ISP router Speedport Smart 3

Am i correct that if i will use non-Mikrotik APs i will be not able to configure guest's wifi networks on one root device (Mikrotik) and i will need to do it manually in the AP site independently and will not be able to configure separated wireless networks with specific routing?

Oh, no 2.5Ghz it is not so good for me.
I have some devices in this range.

But what the speed difference with and without wifiwave2 package?
I did not understand if it increases the speed when multiple connections from different devices happen or also for one device?
I will have only one device where I need to deal with NAS and other not so sensitive (mobile phones, tablets)

What I understood, multiple connections should be served better.

Speed:
From my testing (rudimentary and purely on my devices)
5Ghz: from low 300 to consistent > 400, sometimes even 500Mbps (on Samsung S20 using iPerf3 test server). Not with WIN11-laptop, that one stays mid 200's. I guess the wifi card is not capable to give more though theoretically it should be.
2GHz (but not applicable for RB4001): from around 80Mbps to close to 100Mb so not really THAT much difference
