Wifi romaing Hap ac3

Tue Jun 14, 2022 11:21 am

Welcome All,

I would like to ask you guys for the best practices to setup a wifi network with roaming for 3 routers Hap ac3.
The main router (A) works as router connected to ths ISP with DHCP server and WIFI and is located downstair.
2 other routes are located on the first floor opposite sides of the house, connected via POE Router A - port5 -> Router B port 1 and router B port 5 -> routuer C port 1

I would like to setup a wifi network with roaming funcitonality and use DHCP served from router A.
I tried to use a mesh, but for some reason it is working on router B but can't get DHCP when conneting to router C.
(Router B and C doesn't need to use ethernet, it is just for a WIFI)

Apologies if this was covered already, i tried to search it with no luck..
I will be thankful for any suggeestions.

Thanks a lot

Peter

You have 3 routers in your local network?
Or one router and two APs (or configured as AP)?

Sorry, i should describe this a bit better.
3 the same devices , 1 configured as a router 2 as APs.
With standard configuration as AP when device is roaming it is disconnecting for a short time, when getting into second AP is requesting an IP etc.
I am not sure how to setup proper roaming between 2 APs.

In the ROS it is called a Capsman. It's not full roaming, it's pseudo roaming, but for 95% of the cases it's what you need.

Mikrotik does NOT (edited) really have proper roaming I am afraid.
Try using capsman on the router and setup the two APs as caps.
Make sure you are not using Access Lists for WiFi with reject based on signal. That will cause disconnects as you describe.

Added advice: don't use the wifiwave2 drivers on those AC3 if you plan on using ROS7.
Or capsman will not work anymore.
Most likely the combination will be allowed again in a later version but for now: wifiwave2 = no capsman

Which is a pity since those drivers do improve WIFI performance quite a bit (esp. on 5Ghz)

Though having some advantages, CAPsMAN will not do anything in regards to roaming.
Can you please share your configs so we can have a look at what can be improved (and make sure there is nothing personal in the exports)?

It helps with keeping 2.4 clients connected in noisy environments too.

The local radios on the hAP can be part of the caps-managed APs.

The performance of the radios is another thing.

Personally I would go for wifiwave2 and drop capsman alltogether.
3 APs (of which one works as router) is easy enough to be setup separately.

I think the smart money is on a better WiFi vendor.

first thing about roaming, is mostly a client device decision
configuration and design can help to "persuade" or help the client device to take better roaming decision if it wants.

inmost cases the fisical location of access-points can help a lot, but sometimes the idela location is not viable o available so you must try your best.

regulate access-point tx-power can help too

and last but not least use a the same ssid an security settings on all radios but use separate channels that are not being used by neighboring radios

sometimes is better to use a ssid for 2.4ghz radios and another different for 5ghz radios you must try

RSTP is enabled by default in bridges disable it , that sometimes help
protocol-mode=none
if you have windows laptop clients try wifi nic driver updates and advanced settings, intel wifi nics for example have a lot of options to try

at the end if you need a better roaming you must be sure your client devices support "advanced" roaming protocols and go for big vendor wifi solution like aruba ruckus etc

don't expect good roaming behavior from such "old" client devices
