Upgrade RB2011 to RB5009

Fri Jun 17, 2022 12:43 pm

Hello,

Sort question.

What's the best way to upgrade the RB2011 FW 6 to FW 7?
First make a backup and a terminal configuration export,
- then upgrade?
- or rest to factory settings, then upgrade and restore the backup?

What's the best way to let's run the config of the RB2011 on the RB5009?
First upgrade the RB2011 to FW 7.
Make a backup and a terminal configuration export or the RB2011,
- restore the backup of the RB2011 in the RB5009?
- or restore the configuration export of the RB2011 in the RB5009?

thanks!

all wrong,
backup are not made for migrate config to different hardware.

do
/export file=export
on terminal to obtain the export file,
ad later use that text file to configure the new routerboard

but before do anything is better install 7.3.1 (or better netinstall...)
and reset configuration before import MANUALLY the configuration from export.rsc

all wrong,

Thanks for the quick response :-)

Is the config(export) of FW 6 compatible with FW 7? (in the RB2011) ?
Is the config(export) of the RB2011 compatible with RB5009 (assuming the firmware version are the same)?

ps. with a terminal configuration export I meant "/export file=export"

not, and yes...
some syntax is changed
is why import manyally the config on just resetted new device,
you can see the errors on commands pasted on terminal, and eventually program manually the same thing on winbox following what is writed on exported command...

when the device have same ROS version, the commands are perfectly valid, just some differences caused by hardware, for example if on one board the sfp no. 1 is called sfp1 and on another board is called "sfp9" because is present after ether8, but just little differencies.

Start import from configuring or reconfiguring interfaces/bridges etc to the names as they are in the old device to prevent disconnecting from router during import. Connect to the port which won't be reconfigured too often.
Then import line by line or section by section but remember that all used names should be defined prior using them.
E.g. if you add interfaces to bridge by pasting "add ... " lines then there should be all interfaces renamed to these imported.
Therefore you have to plan the order of imports as sometimes "export" exports data in unexpected order and mixes
blocks of settings.

When you upgrade the RB2011 from v6 to v7 it will try to convert the configuration, and depending on what functionality you are using that may be a complete conversion or it may leave some omissions and problems.
(e.g. "routing filter" is not converted correctly. an attempt is made but it usually requires manual work)

Once you have done this upgrade and possibly refined it, you can then use the /export as input for your RB5009 configuration.
But, as others already wrote, it is not realistic to just import it. There will be many subtle problems and the import will halt on even the most trivial things.

It depends a lot on what you had running on your RB2011 what is the best path for you.
Usually, it is best to just /export the config and keep it open in a text editor, reset the new device to defaults, and manually configure it from scratch with the /export as a guideline.
There may be some things that you may want to cut and paste, e.g. some address list or other plain and repetitive list like WiFi MAC access list, but in general it is not a good idea to copy more complicated config like a firewall, especially when you have built it over a long historic period.
Better to do some things new, starting from current defaults, and omitting things you in the past thought were a good idea.
