station bridge + AP in one device?

Sun Jun 19, 2022 1:05 pm

Is it possible for CPE device to serve local wifi without a separate AP device?

SXTsq series as CPE, site is power constrained and every watt counts.
Does WDS require L4 license on CPE? WDS is still not compatible with bridge (what happens to Ethernet port in WDS mode)? Thanks.

AP device needs ROS license level 4, SXTsq comes with level 3 (which is only good for PtP).

It is possible to add virtual wireless interface operating in ap mode (with license level 4), but it comes with a huge gotcha: it shares all physical stuff with master interface, and includes the following:
  1. antenna with its beam width. Which means virtual AP is only usable inside same beam as used for primary link. With PtP class device it is a pretty sharp constraint.
  2. frequency and channel width
Consequently it shares air time, affecting performance of master wifi interface

So in short: it may be possible to do it, but it won't perform well.
