RB960PGS and Cisco AP (PoE) problems

Thu Jun 16, 2022 9:24 am

Hi

I recently purchased a RB960PGS for use in our summerhouse, since I work in the networking industri I happen to have access to some hardware that was collecting dust on a shelf and happen to have a couple of Cisco AIR-CAP2602I-E-K9 laying around. Great! This will be an easy job I thought.

When configuring all this I connected my RB960PGS to my CRS328-24P-4S+ switch and untagged my internet VLAN on that port so that I could get the VPN and all that stuff up and running and primed for installation later on. Now as far as that goes it was all fine and well, I connected my access points and the got power, the found my vWLC etc. No problems.

The issue I have is that when the RB960PGS is powered using the power-brick the poe ports used light up red as to indicate that they are indeed delivering power but the AP never powers up and the link itself stays down. But if I plug my RB960PGS into the CRS328-24P-4S+ then everything works just fine. Here follows some output.

RB960PGS running RouterOS v7.3.1 (stable)
Status: everything works fine, RB960PGS connected to CRS328-24P-4S+ and gets power through that.
> /interface/ethernet/poe/monitor ether3
             name: ether3
          poe-out: auto-on
   poe-out-status: powered-on
  poe-out-voltage: 51.6V
  poe-out-current: 142mA
    poe-out-power: 7.3W

 > /interface/ethernet/poe/monitor ether2
             name: ether2
          poe-out: auto-on
   poe-out-status: powered-on
  poe-out-voltage: 51.6V
  poe-out-current: 147mA
    poe-out-power: 7.5W
PoE status on the switch for the given port.
Port 15 - powered on - 385mA - 52V - 20W

And let's power the device using the power-brick. Here's the output.
> /interface/ethernet/poe/monitor ether2
             name: ether2
          poe-out: auto-on
   poe-out-status: powered-on
  poe-out-voltage: 24.1V
  poe-out-current: 29mA
    poe-out-power: 0.6W

> /interface/ethernet/poe/monitor ether3
             name: ether3
          poe-out: auto-on
   poe-out-status: powered-on
  poe-out-voltage: 24.1V
  poe-out-current: 26mA
    poe-out-power: 0.6W
So I don't know what I'm missing from the equation here. As best I can tell both the PoE-out specificatoins and the power requirements of the AP match just fine, but when using the power-brick something is not right.

I'm going to reply to my own post here. I think the problem is that the powersupply is only 24V and the requirements for the AP is actually 44 - 57 VDC. I'm going to order a new PSU and post again once that is here.

Hi, me again.

So I got the new 48V PSU delivered today and as expected the APs now power on.
