Tri-Band vs dual band mesh: Bandwidth?

Thu Jun 30, 2022 6:08 am

I'm trying to understand how the different wireless capabilities affect total bandwidth available.

Suppose I have a Mikrotik Audience (Tri-Band 5Ghz) with 2 satellites all within range of one another. The Audience has a 1733 Mbps 4x4 and a 2x2 866 Mbps channel. So the 866 Mbps channel would be the front-haul (to the clients), and the 1733 Mbps would be the backhaul (to each other), resulting in 866 Mbps ((theoretical) bandwidth available to the clients (assuming the client devices are up for the job).

Conversely, something like the Hap AC3 only has 2 chains. So there would be a 433 Mbps front-haul, but also just a 433 Mbps backhaul, meaning there would only be 216 Mbps of (theoretical) bandwidth across the wifi network.

Do I have this right? Or am I way off-base?
