Audience in USA - 160mhz WLAN3

Tue Apr 28, 2020 8:37 pm

Is it possible to use the 160mhz channel at all for wifi on the Audience in the USA? I bought this router to replace my old RB2011 and Unifi AC Lite and thus far I'm seeing no improvement over my old setup because I get "No supported channel" whenever I set WLAN3 to 160mhz. Any help is appreciated!

If you already set 20/40/80/160mhz-Ceeeeeee, may I suggest selecting fixed frequency 5500. Or 5520 for eCeeeeee. Or choose another +20Mhz-step frequency up to 5640 with eeeeeeeC.

Here's my output:

As you can see, when set to 20/40/80/160mhz, no allowed channels are present.

This is my setup for my Audience's wlan3.
After setting it up, remember to give it time to scan for radar - some 5 to 10 minutes. All this time, frontal Led will blink red and afterwards, when interface is active but no clients registered to, it will turn blue. As soon as a device registers to wlan3, it turns green.ImageImageImage

Hey AllexRo,
What RouterOS software version are you running? The only country options for mine are "canada2" and "united states3" and no DFS frequencies are listed. Is there a setting to enable using DFS channels?

Here are the allowed-channels on wlan3 when I have the channel width set to 20mhz:
[admin@MikroTik] > /interface wireless info allowed-channels wlan3
  channels: 5745/20/ac(26dBm),5750/20/ac(26dBm),5755/20/ac(26dBm),5760/20/ac(26dBm),5765/20/ac(26dBm),5770/20/ac(26dBm),5775/20/ac(26dBm),
            5780/20/ac(26dBm),5785/20/ac(26dBm),5790/20/ac(26dBm),5795/20/ac(26dBm),5800/20/ac(26dBm),5805/20/ac(26dBm),5810/20/ac(26dBm),
            5815/20/ac(26dBm),5820/20/ac(26dBm),5825/20/ac(26dBm)

It's running latest stable, 6.46.5.
But, I live in EU so it's a EU version - could it be that US version has limitations?

On hap ac2, it's clearly mentioned on product page:
- hAP ac²-US (USA) is factory locked for 2412-2462MHz, 5170-5250MHz and 5725-5835MHz frequencies. This lock can not be removed.
- hAP ac² (International) supports 2412-2484MHz and 5150MHz-5875MHz range (Specific frequency range can be limited by country regulations).
.. but I couldn't find anything like this on Audience product page.

I think you should wait for MT to unlock UNII-2 frequencies for your US lock model, mine is hAP AC2 US and got those frequencies after updating ROS but the HW is not compatible with 160mhz bandwidth

If that's the case I'll just return it. RB4011 users have been waiting for almost a year for that to happen. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=150463#p741287

The RB4011 is already UNII-2 certified according to FCC ID https://fccid.io/TV74011GS-5HQ2HD. I'm not defending Mikrotik but I guess they're trying to boost their sales in the US unlocking those frequencies but it won't happen immediately.

Can anyone from Mikrotik chime in on when the Audience will receive 160mhz functionality in the USA?

On the Audience in the united states3 country setting, the only available frequencies for WLAN3 are 5745-5825.
Audience has two separate 5G radios. One can only operate in 5180-5320, whereas the other can only operate in 5500-5825. You cannot use 160MHz on wlan3, but you may have better luck on wlan2.

WLAN2 on the Audience does not have option for 160MHz, only WLAN3.

Audience makes an Excellent Zerotier Bridge Node.

I can tolerate using its Wifi for a day or 2 at a time before I turn it back off.

What's new in 6.48.4 (2021-Aug-18 06:43):

...
*) wireless - added U-NII-2 support for US and Canada country profiles for hap ac, hAP ac^3 LTE6, Audience and Audience LTE6;
...

i recommend to try 6.48.6

dont forget after updgrade routeros to update routerboot on system -> routerboard

Still not fixed. Setting Channel Width on WLAN3 to 20/40/80/160MHz XXXXXXXX and it selects Channel 5500/20-Ceeeeeee/ac/DP(23dBm) after waiting 10 minutes of listening for radar.

You're absolutely right! My mistake. It's working now on my US version Audience! Two years later!

For the weary traveler trying to accomplish the same, here are my (applicable) settings:
WLAN 3
Mode: AP Bridge
Band: 5GHz-only-AC
Channel Width: 20/40/80/160MHz XXXXXXXX
Frequency: auto
Skip DFS Channels: disabled
Wireless Protocol: any
Frequency Mode: regulatory-domain
Country: united states
Installation: any

Wireless Protocol: any ???
Must be 802.11 if you want use it with your standard-802.11-non-mikrotik-only devices

and about
Band: 5GHz-only-AC
this make the 5GHz compatible only with ac devices, and if you have non-ac but n only device (or a only), do not connect.

Works just fine on my laptop and cell phone. I think 802.11 is included when "any" is involved. :p

I think than lost radio time to listen for nv2 or nstreme on home AP is completely useless and nonsense....

I wonder about this also now that you mentioned it, I also set 802.11 just to be sure, but did some tests there is no difference between any or 802.11, not sure how any works exactly.

Same. I set to 802.11 and found no difference in performance.

Hmmm ... ROS 7.2.3 doesn't even list any of USA variants as available country settings. Some of ETSI countries list (among others):
          5500 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 1 min)
          5520 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 1 min)
          5540 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 1 min)
          5560 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 1 min)
          5580 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 1 min)
          5600 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 10 min)
          5620 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 10 min)
          5640 MHz 20/40/80/160mhz 30 dBm DFS (CAC 10 min)
I'm currently running it with width=20/40/80mhz so I can't comment on how it performs with 160MHz wide channels.

After more research and playing with an unlocked hap ac3, I think I have the answer:

Image

It looks like the US3 Audience only has 1x80Mhz channel available for each of wifi2 and wifi3 due to no U-NII-2 certification, can you confirm? Due to this and the fact that wifi2 and wifi3 are split in the audience, the 4x4 wifi3 radio can't do 80+80 or 160mhz on the us3 model currently.

Is there a time estimate for when this certification will happen? It looks like some other devices have it (ie: hap ac2).

I guess you'll have to direct your question directly to MT support (this is user forum and threads are not guaranteed to receive any attention from MT staffers), e.g. by sending it to support@mikrotik.com

The diagram you posted does somehow explain lack of any us country settings in international version of audience though.
