Migrating from ubiquiti xr5 to R5SHpn

Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:10 pm

Dear all,

So yes i'm an old fashion, i still use RB433 on a 10KM link since 10 years! The link run on ubiquiti xr5 5ghz NV2 and i get like 10Mbps.
Now i'm thinking to migrate to R5SHpn and this card supports 802.1n, So what is the expectations? would the 802.1n gives better throughput than NV2?
Would also the R5SHpn card perform better than ubiquiti xr5?
share your thoughts and comments!

B/R

Sorry, but until you have only one single antenna, a and n are not identical, but pratically equivalent.

I don't know what antenna you use, but 10Mbps for 10Km they are very few...

Consider to buy two DynaDish 5 ac...

Yes i have 21Dbi Grid antenna on both sides.
Also i checked the DynaDish 5, basically it has comparable Antenna gain and tx power, however can run ac,
So 802.1ac is the gamer changer for better throughput?

Really I do not understand because you can reach only (true?) 10Mbps on 10Km link with that devices...

DynaDish have 25dBi that is near the "triple" quality on reception, because you have also consider the junctions and cable loss, that you do not have on DynaDish

If you have 10Mbps for some reason, and that reason is keeped also with DynaDish, for sure the DD can reach more speed.

I mean i'm also shocked, since this link is working since 10 years,
And i now was thinking about an upgrade, and i checked the specifications and i didn't find any progress on Antenna Gain or TX power (probably due to legal limits) .
only the Wifi Standard have ofcoursed changed and i'm not sure if this is the game changer.

How much throughput in best case condition we expect from 802.1ac as data rate over 10KM?

without creating too much problems to other 5Ghz users, I'm expecting 100-200Mbps

with your actual hardware, if all working correctly, i'm expecting at least 40Mbps

Currently my Signal looks like this:
TX: 58 dBm - SNR: 41dB Stable - Noise floor -101dBm
RX: 62 dBm - SNR: 30-38dB fluctuation - Noise floor -96dBm

I tired 802.1a, Nstreme and NV2, nothing goes beyond 10Mbps.
Would my above signal explain that? or there is something strange here?

Thanks!!

if the devices are the same ,and supposing both are perfectly centered, asymmetric values are unexpected,
or one pigtails / cable / antenna is broken, or one (or both) is not centered.

Can be also some obstacles inbetween.
You sure the devices are on line of sight?

One of the boards is on a mountain (TX), The (RX) is placed on a building in a Capital city.
The board on the mountain see all the city and there i think the problem that it picks up lots of noise.
I will check all your hints, but let me ask the question based on your experience, What is considered a good SNR to achieve 20Mbps?

If you where to switch to the card you posted you should be able to get 20mbps in a 10mhz channel no problem with the signal you currently have.

The SNR of 40dB and 38dB are great

When ruining the built in speed test your CPU tends to be the limiting factor
