2116 and 2216 differences

Tue Sep 13, 2022 8:22 pm

Greetings, I see that the 2116 and the 2216 have exactly the same processor with the same cores and the same working frequency, however the 2216 costs 200% more. The only difference I see in the datasheet is that the 2216 has a different switch chip, which helps in l3hw. But if, for example, I do qos, limit my router and use routing marks, the 2216 would not make a difference with a 2116, is that correct?

The price difference mainly comes from thw 2216 providing 25GBit local links with 100Gbit uplinks vs. 2116 with 1Gbit local links and 10Gbit uplinks.
25/100 Gbit vs 1/10Gbit switch chip makes a big price difference.
If your routing/QOS is CPU based and the load high enough for the CPU being the bottleneck, there will be not much speed difference. As visible in the benchmark results, the speed difference gets smaller the more the CPU is involved.

Correct

The real benefit of 2216 is using it as a core or border router using the Switch Chip ASIC to Hardware Accelerate Forwarding of traffic in Pure Routing, in 2216 CPU will be used mostly in BGP and other Control plane processing tasks

For Processing CPU traffic processing intensive tasks like QoS, Mangle, 2116 will be the best invest, so you need to design your network to divide roles and properly use each Reference

It's also helpful to realize that the 2116 CPU has 4 x 10G lanes into the switch chip

Whereas the 2216 has 4 x 25G lanes from the CPU into the switch chip.
