Is there a default VLAN ?

Mon Sep 26, 2022 12:18 pm

Hi,
I was wondering if there was a default VLAN, like Cisco have VLAN 1 as their default ?

Default is the wrong term to use (although also commonly used). All ports on a VLAN capable device (switch, router, AP, etc.) start with a (so called) default VLAN ID (often ID 1) but are untagged so the tag isn't used. VLAN ID tags only matter once you have more than 1 VLAN and traffic is being controlled (limited, routed, etc) based on VLAN membership.

This is a very brief (and non-technical) explanation so, if anyone wish to give more technical detail, please do so. You can find some more information here.

Thank you,
you confirmed what I suspected.

I have the idea of making VLAN1 tagged on 192.168.88.0/24 on "bridge88" - management net,
and make VLAN's for other purposes, and of course a trunk on ether11 (RB4011 SFP+).

It is a precursor for a larger job later.

That should be avoided if you can.
If you need a management vlan create one, and leave vlan1 in the background as is.
Of course depends on what device you actually have.
