DNS Basics

Fri Oct 07, 2022 7:53 pm

Hi,

What is the minimum paramares to get the router to work as DNS server
if doing everything from scratch:

I have setup DNS server to accept requests and server se to 1.0.0.1 BUT dns cache is not filling up ..

If i connect a computer i get Ip from router and google DNS is used and as dns for navigation
that works like a charm but how get DNS cache to fill up, once i define dns in dhcp for lan ip it stops working for everyone.

i am forgetting something and hate to just push my problem onto people.

thank you for your help

Servers in DNS settings are remote ones that should be used by router, so it can be what your ISP provides, some public ones like Google's, anything. You already found "Allow Remote Requests". Then you need to give router's address as DNS resolver to clients, that's done in DHCP settings. And that's pretty much it. Not counting possible mistakes like blocking access to router's DNS with firewall (default firewall allows it from LAN, that's what you need).
