SWOS and CRS-310-1G-5S-4S-1N - Newbie!

Fri Oct 07, 2022 7:39 pm

Good Day

I am new to Mikrotik products and I picked up a CRS-310-1G-5S-4S-1N thinking it was a switch. Oops. Now I need to convert it to a switch, but I have no idea how to go about it. Is there a youtube video, or a Wiki that will show me the process? If not, is there a good Samaritan out there willing to do a bit of hand-holding and help me get this thing up and running?

There is no way to make this device run SWOS, if that's what you're asking.

However, RouterOS is capable of doing everything that SWOS can do. This device can function as, and is intended, to be a switch.
CRS=Cloud Routing Switch
the CRS 3xx series is notable because it is (starting with ROS v7) capable of hardware offloading certain L3 routing functions onto the switch chip.
But you don't need to use these feature and can have it function as a purely L2 switch just like any other device running SWOS. RouterOS can do everything SWOS can plus more.

The CRS310 is a L2 switch with Layer3 routing capability.
You have the right product, but I'm not sure if you understand how to program the interface ports to do it via Router OS.
There are plenty of guides e.g :https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:C ... s_switches

In the simplest form, create a bridge, add all interfaces you want to the bridge using bridge->ports.
Should take you about 30 seconds via winbox

No hand-holding, but here is a video with CRS326 setup (and the same applies to CRS310)

If you have used Winbox before, the actual switch setup starts at this offset.

If you want written documentation, it is here.

I have the same question.
SwitchOS support was added in RouterOS 7.5, but I can't find any SwitchOS download link for this device.

Release notes RouterOS7.5 - viewtopic.php?p=956403
*) swos - enabled SwitchOS support for CRS310-1G-5S-4S+;

Got this information from support:
"With 7.5 we added support for SwOS, to get RouterOS ready for SwOS release, but SwOS for this device is still not released. Can't give you any ETA at the moment."

Somebody doesn't know that RouterOS pushes switching (and now Layer 3 routing) to the switch CPU. I have several of these in production routing (and switching) traffic at wire speed.
