Is it possible to use KNOT L8 as a LoRaWAN node?

Mon Oct 24, 2022 10:10 am

We are currently playing around with the KNOT L8 (RB924i-2nD-BT5&BG77) and we like what we are seeing so far. We are considering the KNOT to become our go-to communication module in a lot of different IoT setups.

One of those setups involves a network of Lora-nodes and of course a KNOT as gateway. However, we would also like to use the KNOT as a node. We have a project right now where the KNOTs Modbus support will come in handy for reading of certain energy meters scattered around on a large construction site. Is that technically possible, or is the KNOT only set up to function as a gateway?

Our LoRa gateways use miniPCIe cards, like:

or:

or, new addition:

The main difference is operating frequency.

They are "packet forwarders" and are meant to be used as "gateways". They basically, allow RouterOS to "catch" LoRa node broadcasted payloads (uplink messages from the nodes) and then immediately forwarded them to the configured server via IP connection. The downlink message from the LoRa server will arrive at the router/gateway via IP connection and then the "mini PCIe" card will use LoRa frequency to send the message back to the LoRa node.

The LR mini PCIe cards can not be used as LoRa nodes. LoRa node is a device that broadcasts data/information over the LoRa frequency. LoRa gateway is a device that is a "translator" between the server and the node.
