crs305 must I connect to SFP+?

Wed Nov 30, 2022 12:09 pm

Hi everyone, first post here

I got RB4011 as main router, plus CRS305 as a switch. My PC and NAS will connect to CRS305 directly for 10G connection.
The problem is, do I need to connect CRS305 to SFP+ port on RB4011 so I can enjoy 10G connect between my PC and NAS?

CRS305 has 4x10Gbit ports and 1 x1Gbit port. If you want a 10 Gbit between two devices they both have to be connected to 10Gbit ports !
The same goes for your PC. If you want 10Gbit between your PC and NAS, both have to be connected to 10 Gbit ports... as simple as that...

If PC and NAS are in the same IP subnet and CRS is configured as simple switch, then RB4011 will not be part of PC<->NAS communication. So no, for this particular use case RB4011 does not have to be connected to SFP+ port. In this case RB4011 will only be used when accessing internet and assuming your WAN speed is 1Gbps or lower, connecting RB4011 to RJ45 port of CRS will do nicely.
