Basic use of Microtik RB 3011 router

Sat Dec 03, 2022 12:41 pm

Dear
I get Mikrotik router (RB 3011) and I need to setup only few think to work as normal home router.
Is it somewhere easy explain of setup microtik router with winbox to setup only fix IP addresses to MAC, to setup DDNS on noip.com service, one fix IP address to DMZ, and port forwarding for few IP addresses?

Thanks

And I didn't mention that internet will enter on LAN1 port (as WAN).
Thanks

I suggest you to start with QuickSet mode HomeAP (if there is one for wired-only router) and then only make minor necessary changes. The reason being very decent default firewall, many on-line tutorials (youtube etc.) are either obsolete, inefficient or plain wrong.

We dont do DMZ, its so consumer class ;-)

The router can do most everything you want except make hot chocolate.
Best thing is to draw up a network diagram of what you have and what you envision.

ISPs (one or more)
Number of private subnet..... ( this is conceptually, such as home users wired, home user wireless, guest wifi, IOT devices wifi, etc........... explored more fully in requirements below )
Devices attached to router ports ( pcs, managed switches, etc.)

Then detail the requirements
a. identify users or groups of users including yourself as admin
b. identify what each user or user group should be able to do or not to do........

Then we can discuss an appropriate config........

Steps 1 and 3

Dear
Thank you for your response. QuickSet is useful but not sufficient. It would be excellent if it existed in the router some better Quick or User friendly Quick Set as on normal user routers for Nobs :)
And, yes, I will use this router as wired only router.

Thanks for your response. I will not use this superb router on this high level (no more users or others 1000s option because I am not so good in that:)).
I will send my drawings what is in my plan to do with this router. I hope that is not so complicated to setup this kind of easy job for this professional router. Usually this settings is very easy for user friendly routers.

yup, easily handled by the device, are the access points able to read vlan tags or are they basic consumer models?

Suggest you read the section on vlans here in terms of understanding
- viewtopic.php?t=143620
But apply that knowledge like so.....

Using winbox, work through the Configuration Steps logically.
FIRST though, take one etherport and configure it so that it is accessible off the bridge to avoid getting locked out!!.
( viewtopic.php?t=181718 )
Add Bridge (or modify default Bridge as required)
Add VLANS with the parent interface being the Bridge
Create Subnet Structure for each VLAN (and likely modify the default subnet to be one of the VLANs)
Construct /interface bridge ports ( etherports and WLANs as applicable )
Construct /interface bridge vlans ( tagged and untagged **** Should match up with /interface bridge ports as a cross-check )
Make Changes to LAN Interface List ( remove bridge and add all vlans typically)
Add Management/Base Interface List & applicable members (Base Vlan and off bridge etherport for example)
Adjust Firewall Rules as necessary (Base List to Input Chain, LAN List to Input Chain for DNS, etc. ( required router services ))
Go to CLI and run export and see if any errors crop up.
Turn on bridge vlan filtering.

You have to do the work, if you are not willing as it seems to be the case, suggest https://mikrotik.com/consultants

Thank you for your help
AP connected to router are basic consumer models for WLAN through the house so they don't need VLAN. I will try this, but I was thinking some step by step manual for dummies' :)

See para M1 here - viewtopic.php?t=182373

If you want spoon feeding, then you should stick with consumer devices..

After this I am also realize that :) After all thank you for your unselfish effort. I will try more and more, but probably I will ended with consumer devices.

Thank you very much

Dont give up too quickly. I knew nothing about MT operating system and stuck with it. Yes it was slow going but I am glad I did as I enjoy the challenge. I also have minimal networking IT training.

The generic setup is basic and a standard firewall is easy to setup, and thus the key is to start small, and build a solid base of a minimal config and then add pieces as required.

You have a good starting diagram so next detail the requirements.

Identify each separate user or groups of users including you as admin
Identify what each group should be able to do
Identify what each group should not be able to do
