HexS PoE In 802.3af Support

Thu Dec 08, 2022 12:05 pm

Good morning,
I have a Hex S which I wanted to power through my PoE switch (TP-Link SG1005P, 802.3af/at compliant). On the Hex S specs page I can see it supports both passive and af/at PoE in.
However, when I plug it in, nothing happens, Hex S doesn't power up. I have no issues powering a few Ubiquiti Nano HD from this switch, so it is proven to work with 802.3 af devices.
I've tried disconnecting everything from the switch, leaving just Hex S, no luck.
I've updated firmware to latest 7.6, both packages and RouterBOARD FW, no luck.
I've tried both straight and crossover cables, no luck.

I googled for the similar issues and these came up:
PoE switch not powering SXT AC
mAP 802.3af support
hEX-S PoE in (eth1) advertises 802.3af/at, but doesn't work

It seems like Hex S is not proper 802.3af device? Or there is a config I should set somewhere to make it work?

So I've tried to power it from Unify AF injector and it worked. This injector has Pins 4,5 (+) and 7,8 (-), which corresponds to Mode B PoE.
it still doesn't work from the switch, which apparently use Mode A.
As per standard:
The PSE, not the PD, decides whether power mode A or B shall be used. PDs that implement only mode A or mode B are disallowed by the standard.

Does this mean that Hex S is not 802.3af compliant and should not be advertised?
