260gsp can't hold 1gbit on ports

Sun Jan 08, 2023 12:02 pm

i have a problem with rb260gsp , i have 3 devices on poe ports and 1 with no poe.
sxt ac holds 1gbit for just a few seconds and then drops on 100mbit. if i force only 1gbit , then there is no link. the cable is about 25m long and i did NOT have such problem with rb260gs using gigabit poe injectors.
the other cable is about 50m long and it holds 1gbit for about 30min or so, and then drops to 100mbit. this WAS happening with the 260gs too. this is non-poe connection. the other side is a tplink gigabit router. if i connect the cable to the hex router, it keeps gigabit forever, i was using this setup for 3 years with no problem with gigabit.
the only port that holds 1gbit is to a hex router but the cable is only 1m long.

all longer cables are outdoor ubiquiti toughcable pro. the cables are not grounded, but the 260gsp doesn't have ground connectors anyway.

this is log from sxt.
100mbit.PNG
firmware on the gsp is 1.17

is the switch malfunctioning? is this a firmware issue?
if i connect the sxt to a poe injector to the hex router, it can hold 1 gbit for months, so it's not a cable problem.
thank you

This is something that "should work" if everything was done according to standards. If something's flakey, then things start to fall appart in random ways. And different equipment can misbehave in different ways.

My 1st person experience: I've had UTP cables pulled by experienced electrician and the guy also installed UTP outlets on one end. Then I installed patch pannels on the other end. I didn't inspect the outlets, I only tested individual wire continuity which was fine. However I've had similar problems as you do (actually they were greater, link couldn't work reliably even at 100Mbps). After some time I borrowed a professional UTP tester (some Fluke gadget) and results were terrible. So I finally inspected the outlets: the electrician did with UTP cables what he was used to do with power wires: untwist and separate them at some length (it was approx 10-15cm in my case) so that he could connect them to outlets easier.
The solution was to twist pairs back and re-connect them to outlets. After that all lines tested great for 1Gbps and I haven't had any problems since.
Morale of this story: UTP connections are extremely sensitive to any installation errors (even slight ones). I guess this goes also for some tight cable twists or corners that might cause minor damage to cable ... and might go also for not grounding one end of STP cable.

A very timely point. I'm about to go an install some new Mikrotik kit in a small local charity. They paid an electrician to install the cabling and sockets. Now I have no reason to suspect the wiring but AFAIK they are not network specialists so may have done something similar. So I'm going to inspect it and test each cable. There are only six of them.
