Hap AC 5500 channel problem

Mon Apr 25, 2022 7:52 am

I have a problem with an old HAP AC.
If I set anything other than 5500/20MHz, 5GHz wifi is not visible to any of the devices.
I know about 1min dfs delay.
I tried combos: 80MHz XXXX, and every Ceee, eCee etc...
Did the same for 40MHz width.
It is only visible at 20MHz.
There are no wifi neighbours using the same frequency.
I also have HAP AC2, and HAP AC3, and the same setup works fine with 40 and 80MHz.
Only difference to setup below is the frequency.
I prefer to use 5500 because it is usually interference free, while 5180 is apsolutly always crowded.
ROS version is 7.2.1, firmware also.
Any thoughts?

Check country settings and on terminal do
/interface wireless info country-info
It will display what is allowed for your specific country settings.

Not sure anymore in what version if was done but there is a lot more strict setting now as far as wireless is involved for the country you have used.
In some countries you can get a quite heave fine when the wrong settings are applied.

It is allowed.
I forgot to mention that I have checked that already.
Also, take note, same setup on HAP ac2 and HAP ac3 works fine.

be sure your client devices support that frequency, many client devices dont support it

try this to see more info about wireless events

For frequency 5500, DFS time may be 10 minutes, at least for EU countries. Anyway, you can check the status in the lower right corner of the wlan2 window.

5500 is a one minute radar check. The 10 minutes are only needed if any of the wheater radar channels (5600-5620-5640) are part of the wide channel.
Klembord-3.jpg
.
Remark: MT does NOT use the midfreq notation for wide channels, but uses only the 20 MHz channel freq !!! For 5500 only Ceee is possible for 80MHz.
.
You have a formidable tool there with you to check the working of the hAP AC. Use the hAP ac2 or ac3 with tools "SCAN, SNOOPER, Wireless SNIFFER, freq usage"
They could also be used to connect as "station" to the hAP AC . The wireless log will even tell you how they decide to connect, by giving all the used broadcasted beacons in the log.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

How is that possible? Those are three family routers, three HAP-s, in three separate apartments, all of them for same devices.
So my phone connects just fine to 5500 hap ac2 and hap ac3, but is not compatible for hap ac?

Thanks for the idea. Hap ac2 is free for this at the moment. Will check and post later today/tommorow.

Well, this is resovled, sort of.
I finnaly reset the interface wlan2, and now it is working as expected.
I can set channel 5500 on 80MHz width, devices see the network an are connecting normally.
Here is the config, so if anybody has the time to study the difference from the first post that could cause such behavior.
Everything edited is absolutely the same as in the first config.

What is in the LOG? see @chechito setting.

Config on its own is not enough to know what is happening. Things are time dependent (DFS wait times) and environment dependent. Wifi is a shared medium as you know.
Bandwidth XXXX is not well defined. For quite some devices it must be Ceee. The XXXX is good for wifi station mode, it will accept everything, not so good for AP mode.

"vht-basic-mcs=mcs0-7" may give problems for some devices like RaspberryPi and ESP8266 & ESP32 at least. With Data Rates on default, VHT MCS is not shawn in WinBox but it is vht-basic-mcs=none. It's "Schrödinger's cat" behaviour. When you change the Data Rates from default to configured, the vht-basic-mcs is not only displayed but also changed !

DFS on 5500-Ceee is a 1 minute total silence, but when a radar signal is detected (real or just false alarm) then WLAN2 will jump to the next 80 MHz width, and that includes the weather radars, so there then comes 10 minutes total silence and listening for radar/weather radar. (It's in the status screen, and in the LOG. .... 'detecting radar'). This may repeat for ever.

Yes, well, I've been through all of that. Logs nothing.
DFS is not the cause. I know how long it can take, and I newer saw radar detected in logs.
It simply did not work. Before I could not see the 5GHz wifi network on channel 5500 if anything else was set except 20MHz width.
After loading default settings, it works fine.
If anybody can see the cause in the interface configuration, if not, I would call this an undocummented bug.
Also, like I said earlier, I have 3 HAP routers, HAP ac (that gave me this problem), HAP ac2 and AC3, channel is supported in my region, channel width also.
And it is also supported on all testing devices, they connect to the same settings just fine on all other routers.
So, to repeat, everything works fine after I did reset configuration on interface.
5500 is used to extend the signal coverage to cover all of the appartment, and to avoid those few neghbours on 5180.
