Mikrotik DNS (?) Issues

Thu Feb 02, 2023 3:43 pm

Dear folks,

I really would like any advise on a matter here.
Recently (a couple of days ago) my network started to misbehave, and some weird things are occurring.
For example, my Windows laptop says my Wifi has no internet, but I can utilize it normally (I'm writing this post right now); My Linux Server, connected via ethernet, can't update (apt update), returning timeout. When I connect the Linux with my iPhone wifi tethering, it works just fine; My Smart TV says there's a connection issue (via Wifi or Eth) with the internet, but I can watch Netflix; My PS5 console can't connect to the Wifi network, saying there a network issue.

Another weird thing, in my hAP ac, I'm able to update the routerOs. But in one cAP ac, configured as stand-alone, not CAPsMAN, it timed out.
imagem_2023-02-02_103120102.png
Nothing changed in my settings for quite a while, so I have no idea what might have been generating these issues.

Here are my export settings for both Router and cAP ac.

Did you try rebooting the router?

Didnt see anything amiss on the router config but
suggest set this to NONE for all entries
/interface detect-internet
set internet-interface-list=NONE

I dont use capsman and thus cannot comment on the capac, but I would never set it up that way. :-)
Is there a specific reason why you have no forwarding selected and why you have bridge nat enabled ??

I did. Both devices, and nothing changed.

I set detect-internet as NONE, but nothing changed.
I'm actually moving from Mikrotik AP to Unifi, so I am not worried about the cAP.
No there's no reason for the bridge nat, I don't remember setting it. Can it be responsible for this weird behavior?

Best,

Re: Mikrotik DNS (?) Issues

Here is how I setup my capac..........
It is not a router and thus do not require firewall rules etc...........
Clean simple works well! Four VLANS to the capac on a trunk port with vlan12 being the trusted vlan from which the capac gets its own IP address (set statically on both devices).
THe emergaccess is what do with ether2 off bridge. It allows me to config the device and make bridge changes easily during initial deployment and provides me with a quick access if there is a problem at the capac site via ethernet and laptop. Highly recommended. If you do not have easy access, when first deploying attach an ethernet cable to ether2 and run it to where you have access for future use.

Re: Mikrotik DNS (?) Issues

I think I found the issue.

There were three NAT rules to forward ports 8443, 80 and 22 from inbound WAN to my Linux server (10.25.10.10).
I disabled them and everything went back to normal.

I'm just wondering why these dstnat rules started to mess with everything since they should be applicable for inbound connections only.

Be careful! Last week I logged in to a remote router at an unattended site because I saw strange traffic, I saw that "detect internet" was configured, turned it off, and I lost the connection.
Someone had to go on-site to re-enable it. And I still do not understand why it broke. I'm even reluctant to try again in safe mode :-)

pelchi, thanks for the tip, which detect internet?? What is the safe setting.............????

As to the DST nat rule, sorry I hadnt looked at them but they are screwed up because of mis configurations!!!

add action=dst-nat chain=dstnat comment=\
"Direciona as chamadas do Unifi para o Unifi Controller Linux" dst-address=\
191.250.187.198 dst-port=8443 in-interface-list=WAN protocol=tcp \
to-addresses=10.25.10.10 to-ports=8443

The above one tells me you have a fixed WANIP of 191.xxxx and therefore you should not have the in-interface-list=WAN

If its not a fixed IP which I dont think it is simply remove the dst-address entry!!

add action=dst-nat chain=dstnat dst-port=80 protocol=tcp ??MISSING INTERFACE?? to-addresses=\
10.25.10.10[/i]

The above rule references fails to reference an interface so ALL port 80 Traffic is being sent to 10.25.10 LOL[/b]

Maybe 10.25.10.10 is his local squid cache of the whole internet.

Dunno but I'd bet it was the "interface can obtain (or has obtained) an address from DHCP" rule... It will add a DHCP client on any of the allowed "Detect Internet" interfaces to help "detect" apparently...

Compound that logic with the Mikrotik iOS that "promotes" it to an end-user (e.g. "Do you want to enable 'Detect Internet'?") - which will set /interface detect-internet set detect-interface-list=all – so it easier to get enabled than one might think.

But if you then change it to /interface detect-internet set detect-interface-list=none, it will remove any DHCP client it added... If one of those was /ip/dhcp-client was needed for internet, good bye.

That is probably it! Thanks. I now see that device has no dhcp client configured, still it requires it to operate.
So probably I can add a dhcp client manually and then turn off detect-internet.
Indeed, I have seen several times that detect-internet was suddenly enabled on a router where I am sure that it wasn't before, and after asking the owner it turned out he had installed the TikApp, connected the router, and got a red marking indicating detect-internet was not enabled and tapped it.
That explained why it was enabled and started sending the crap that it does.

Oh I've been burned by this logic myself. Disabled is best. It won't/can't add two DHCP clients however, but the "D" for dynamic in /ip/dhcp-client isn't something that's obvious...

But one approach I've used is to create an interface list for "DETECT_INTERNET" and add the actual internet interface to that list, and set that list as the "detect-interface-list=". This keeps the Mikrotik app happy (which also shows a nice chart of internet traffic to the user in TikApp) with less risk to errand DHCP client being added. That is until the user disabled/enabled internet detect in TikApp, which then set it back to "all"...

It's quite frustrating, it could be a useful tool, instead it's a disaster waiting to happen...

Because you didn't have an interface filter on the port 80 one, that's why.

The rest of the stuff about DHCP and Detect Internet is just crap.

Got it. Makes sense.
I'm gonna edit these rules and filter pppoe or wan on in interface.

Thanks
