Few notes on how to successfully use Netinstall on Mac

Sun Feb 05, 2023 11:36 am

Here are a few notes on now to successfully use NetInstall on Intel Macs (works on all version od MacOS, tested last on Ventura).

Steps:
1. Download same version of ROS installation and Netinstall for the bricked deivice (don't mix different Netinstall and ROS versions).
2. You need to have Windows 10 virtual machine running under WMware Fusion. On Intel you can use native 64-bit, and on ARM I presume ARM Windows 10 would work (can't). Then transfer the Netinstall and ROS files to the virtual machine.
3. Connect the device you need to recover with direct cable and your mac (say iMac, MacBook Pro, etc.)
4. Your RouterBoard device will have 192.168.88.1 IP in netinstall mode.
5. Set your MAC adapter to 192.168.88.2/24, because as there is no running DHCP the link will be dead on the host and your VM won't be able to connect to LAN
6. Set the NIC in your VM to 192.168.88.3/24 and turn off Windows Defender Firewall
7. When you start Netinstall, set the ip 192.168.88.4 under Net booting + check "Boot server enabled"

When all this is done, press and hold reset button, power up the device and keep holding it pressed until you see the device in the in the Routers/Drivers. Then all you have to do is update the firmware and hopefully all will work.

With straight Windows machine this is much simpler, but if you are on the Mac and this is the way to go. (Winbox64 runs fine under Wine.)
