Default Switch Behaviour

Mon Feb 06, 2023 12:18 am

Hi,

I want to check what's the default behaviour for a MikroTik switch. The scenario is that VLANs are setup but when a router goes offline\is completely turned off, what happens with the communication on the switch itself ? Would all the connected devices be able to talk with each other that the router is now offline\turned off or does the switch maintain the communication on the switch and all the devices remain on their respective VLANs and are unable to communicate with each other ?

I'm new to this and would appreciate a helping hand.

Thanks

The switch does not know nor care if there is a router connected to it. Other than the port on the switch that is connected to the router going idle if the router dies, nothing changes on the switch.

Does that answer your question?

The devices on separate VLANs would not be able to talk with each other since the router is not available to forward the traffic.

Each vlan acts like a separate switch and island. So all devices within each vlan will be able to communicate at layer 2, just as they would if the were connected to a dumb switch. The difference is that the managed switch also has the ability to tag/untag, so for example if there was an access point that was vlan aware and communicating over a trunk link, the devices in the vlan associated with an SSID would still be able to communicate via wifi.

But most things expect other services of the router, like dhcp, routing to the internet, etc.

MikroTik L2 switches behave the same as other L2 switches.

Some background here. More about vlans here.
