Request: IP-SLA

Wed May 07, 2014 5:33 am

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/i ... index.html

I would like to see something similar to Cisco's IP-SLA. Something to monitor the jitter latency, throughput, etc. in real time for enforcing or proving SLAs.

Would love to use these as probes as well as pull stats off of existing routers.

Ccm messaging as part of g.8032 ethernet rings can be used this way. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

+1 !

Netwatch can do some of this but it would be nice to have a protocol baked into ROS that can handle this

Yes, I also need this for latency/jitter/packet loss detection

I would love to see this feature.

We maintain some fairly large WAN's and this would be a huge benefit to us.

I want IP-SLA Please.....

Please.... It would be nice to be able to make adjustments to how much of the router's resources can be dedicated to IP-SLA Tasking.

I wrote a script for monitoring latency and packet loss. If anyone else would like to use it, let me know and I'll post it.

I know that this is not for this topic but I am interested. How much money is SLA in your countries? Could You give me some prices ?

OK, here it is.

The below script is a "setup" to create all the items necessary to setup a monitor on one IP address. By its self, this setup does nothing but monitor one ip address and based on the results, sets a global variable for to "up" or "down". You need another "failover" script to monitor these global variables and take action. I'll post my failover script shortly.

Here is what the setup script does though:
1. Creates a "probe" script & schedule that runs a ping and stores the latency
- Set "probeInterval" to decide how frequently scheduler runs this
- Set "livesKept" to decide how many ping results to store (I recommend keeping 100)
- Set "target" to the IP you want to monitor
- Set "ipslaName" to the name. Should be "ipsla1", "ipsla2", etc.. Each must be unique.
2. Creates a "analyze" script & schedule that runs analysis on the stored ping responses
- Set "analyzeInterval" to decide how frequently scheduler runs this
- Set "checkNumStats" to decide how many previous statistics to calculate loss on. I set this to the same value as "livesKept" since I don't care about storing data longer than it is used to calculate the average latency/average packet loss
- Set "latencyThreshold" to the average milliseconds threshold for the monitor to go to a "down" state
- Set "lossThreshold" to the percent packet loss threshold for the monitor to go to a "down" state
3. Creates rules in /ip proxy access . These rules do nothing but store ping values for each instance
- If you use "/ip proxy" for it's intended purpose (running a proxy), you will have to find a different area to store the ping variables in and adjust this script.

Before running the setup, please edit values under the, "User set Variables" comment first. This was tested on ROS version 5.26.
#Script creates variable storage in /ip proxy access for an ipsla instance.
# User set Variables
#Variable represents the name of the ipsla instance (recommended to name them: ipsla1, ipsla2...ipslaN)
:local ipslaName ipsla1;

:local size "1200";
#Variable represents total number of ping records to keep
:local livesKept 100;
:local probeInterval "10s";
#Analyze Interval should be a multiple of the probe interval
:local analyzeInterval "4m";
#Number of previous statistics to calculate loss/latency averages on
:local checkNumStats 100;
#Threshold for when latency will cause monitor to be down status
:local latencyThreshold 500;
#Threshold for when packet loss will cause monitor to be down status (this_variable is a percentage)
:local lossThreshold 15;

#Add proxy rules for storing ping statistics

   \n    :set ".$ipslaName."PacketLossPercent \$percentLoss;\
   \n    :set ".$ipslaName."AverageLatency \$avgLatency;\
   \n };")

Keep in mind that this script uses floodping since regular ping can not return a latency value to a script. Floodping can only run one instance at a time so these scripts use a global variable called, "floodpingisbusy" to check whether it is in use by another probe monitor before trying to probe. For this reason, I don't think you can run many more than 4 or 5 probe scripts at a time (depending on the probe interval, this 4-5 estimate is based on 10s interval).

Some useful suggestions after running initial setup:
1. Go to IP -> Proxy -> Access and see current values to confirm this is working
2. Go to System -> Scripts -> Environment to see current values of global variables
3. Watch logs to see "analyze" scripts running and current statistics

Please feel free to post suggestions or improvements.

I believe IP-SLA goes in hand with, yet different from Y.1731. I want that too. ;-)

Yup, +1

That said, I still rank most of the IPv6 feature requests above this one in respect to dev time.

IP-SLA would be very useful. I'm specifically interested in the VoIP RTP packet / MOS report that Cisco offers.
