10 GbE Routing possible?

Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:33 pm

Hi there,

I am planning to upgrade my hardware to the following:
- 1x RB5009UPr+S+IN (Router)
- 1x CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+RM (Gigabit Switch)
- 1x CRS312-4C+8XG-RM (10 GbE Switch)

I want to connect RB5009 and CRS354-48G with one SFP+-DAC-Cable. Also CRS354-48G and CRS312 shall be connected with two SFP+-DAC-Cables.

Now my beginner question: If I have connected components to the 10 GbE Switch, which are located in different VLANs, the traffic from one component to the other is moved on L3 through the RB5009, isn't it? So I guess it is not possible to get full speed between those components with the RB5009? The 10 GbE Switch would only make sense, if all connected components would be in the same VLAN, wouldn't it?

Best regards,
cyb

removed excessive quotting of preceding post; be wise, quote smart, save network traffic
Both the CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+RM and the CRS312-4C+8XG-RM supports L3 Hardware Offloading. Therefore both switches capable of hardware assisted inter VLAN routing at close to wire speed. For further information read the referenced part of the documentation.

By the way since both switches have multiple SFP+ ports, maybe a CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS would be a better match for these switches. Also think about the network topology: do you want to use the CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+RM as your core switch or rather have a dedicated core switch with nearly only fibre ports (such as CRS309-1G-8S+IN, CRS317-1G-16S+RM, CRS326-24S+2Q+RM or CRS504-4XQ-IN) and connect both CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+RM and CRS312-4C+8XG-RM access switches (and of course the router) to it?

Thank for for the information about L3 Hardware Offloading!

And also thanks for your comments about the network topology. I will think about it...

I am still quite unsure, which way to go.

I do not want to use the CRS312 anymore. 10 GbE with copper seems to be more power consuming than using fibre optics.

So currently I am thinking about those two alternatives:
- CRS309-1G-8S-IN as core switch
- CRS354-48G connected to CRS309 with SFP+
- CSS610-8P for PoE connected to CRS09 with SFP+
- RB5009 as main router connected to CRS309 with SFP+

Or the second alternative:
- CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS as core switch and main router
- CRS354-48G connected to CCR2004 with SFP+
- CSS610-8P for PoE connected to CCR2004 with SFP+

Power consumption should be equal in both alternatives (RB5009: 15W, CRS309: 17W compared to CCR2004: 32W) but there will be addional noise of the CCR2004's fans.

I guess the second alternative is more advisable because the core switch will also do the main routing, isn't it?

Is the CCR2204 more powerful than the RB5009 even though it is older?

yes CCR2004 is superior to RB5009, in some scenarios can be up to 4x better, in other scenarios only a 30% better

ccr2004 has some higher level licensing and other useful things

If you really want much more processing power i suggest going straigth for CCR2116 you will no regret it

aditionaly it has an integrated switch supporting HW L3 offload so it can help a lot and simplify your network design

CCR2004 is more powerful than RB5009.

CCR2004-16G-2S+ test results (they are essentially the same for CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS)
RB5009 test results
