Online 802.11 AP reconfiguration

Mon Mar 27, 2023 11:47 pm

Hi,

I am a potential Mikrotik customer.
I'd be interested in purchasing an 802.11a AP which would allow me to reconfigure at runtime parameters such as frequency channel and transmission power.
Is this possible with RouterOS ? I understand that these parameters are "exposed" by the OS (CHANNEL_WIDTH, FREQUENCY, PREAMBLE_MODE, TX_POWER), but it is not clear to me whether i) they can be reconfigured and, in particular, ii) they can be reconfigured "at runtime", i.e., without interrupting service, when applicable.

Thanks,
Matteo

Wireless properties can be changed run-time, it's not necessary to restart AP or something. However, changes do interrupt service, because at least some can not be applied without breaking ongoing connections (e.g. change of frequency). Normally stations will reconnect quickly, but connections can drop.

That makes sense, thanks for the prompt answer!

Be aware of DFS frequencies in the 5 GHz band.. Any change to the settings will re-initiate the radar-detect for that channel. (AP is not transmitting at all during 1 minute, or even 10 minutes if the DFS is for a "weather" channel.)
