NTP Server issues

Tue Mar 21, 2023 4:17 pm

Hello!

My goal was to set up a local NTP server so my Windows machines without gateway+dns settings could get precise time.

I installed additional packet to my Routerboard and now I have System > NTP Server option, where I enabled the server.

But as long as I try to update Windows time from that server (RB's IP), I get error saying "The peer is unreachable".

I found a thread: viewtopic.php?t=138333 but in my case there's no rules at all in IP > Firewall

I created one to just log the access to RB's UDP:123 and here's an example of log entry:

input: in:bridge1 out:(unknown 0), src-mac **:**:**:**:**:**, proto UDP, 192.168.88.254:123->192.168.88.1:123, len 76

Looks like NTP Server is accessible, but Windows thinks otherwise. Tried on 3 different PC with the same result (Windows firewall is disabled). I already set up gateway+dns and they updates from time.windows.com just fine. What's wrong with RB's NTP Server?

without gateway

Probably windows think that do not have internet SO the time is unavailable...

Also RouterOS must be syncronsized with external source for provide NTP service...

In plain Italian
NTP is a router service.
a. enable NTP client settings to get ntp from www
b. enable NTP server settings to give to downstream devices
c. enable input chain rule for such LAN devices to reach router on port 123.

Additionally: NTP server on ROS v6 seems to be slightly non-standard ... ROS v7 clients don't want to sync with it although ntpq (linux command line tool) output seems fine.

I was gonna comment your statement, but the comnent would probably be rated as PG18

Plus I only found this out the other day. Days of v6 in my home network are counted, so why should I bother to report ... And it's not a security problem ...

Thanks for not being sarcastic this time.
Now I see that NTP server works only when NTP client says synchronized in its status. But come on, how obvious is this? I mean, why NTP server would work only when NTP client works if it's indeed a router service? Just give me RB's time, even if I set it manually, why no? Besides, it works somehow very unstable. If I try to sync Windows time manually via button, it works after 3-4 tries which end with timeouts.

That (it works after 3-4 times) is actually a bug in Windows, not in RouterOS!
But the fact that you need NTP to be synchronized before it works is standard NTP functionality. The NTP designers see no value in an NTP server returning bogus time.
Some developers have added support for a "local clock" and return the time from that (even when it is not synchronized) but MikroTik routers DO NOT HAVE a clock chip!
Without external reference, they are lost.
