Behind another router-> how to setup?

Fri Apr 21, 2023 2:21 pm

Hi
I have a UDM(Unfi) router setup handling the connection to the ISP.
I have bought a mikrotik router 10Gb switch/router that will work on the lan handling 4X 10Gb connections.

Where I am struggling is setting up the connection from the eth port on the router back to the UDM!???
Is there a guide I can look at or a youtube video to look at/watch to step through the sequence.
Iam trying the routerOs rather than the switchOs so I can hopefully get the SMB portion working to.

Any help gratefully received.

Hi thanks for the fixed links.
My main problem at the moment I went in routeros in winbox and told it to switch to switchos.
This did not go well and no amount off flashing or poking or prodding works now.

Precisely when I try to gain access in winbox, it opens the browser which produces a 404

I have contacted support again and I am waiting for response.

Are you saying you tried the options in https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/SwOS/CRS3xx#Dual_Boot

The only SwOS device I have is the RB260. And it shows up in winbox, but winbox won't connect to it. Use your web browser instead to connect to SwOS.

Hi Buckeye
This talks of a serial console, is this via putty or similar?
All I have is that I can attempt that via the ETH interface!
It the device has 4 sft+ ports and one normal eth port.

How does the device show up in WinBoot?

Here are my 3 devices RB260GS (CSS106-5G-1S) and the two RouterOS devices (RB760iGS and RB5009)

Hi
thanks for replying. It my MikroTik isa showing the same as yours is except it has no ip address displaying 0.0.0.0. This could be because
I am trying to go down the netinstall rout and have manual configured my internet settings as per their instructions.
I was before I went shopping having difficulty following the instructions, I was unable to get my mikrotik to show up to
complete the process.

I would try manually setting your PC to 192.168.88.213 255.255.255.0 and then trying to browse to 192.168.88.1

Do you get a response then?

I note you dont mention gateway address
As long as you are in the same subnet, the gateway isn't used. It can be set to any value.

If network mask is 255.255.255.0 only the first three digits have to match to be on the same network/subnet. 192.168.88.1 and 192.168.88.213 are in the same subnet, so any traffic between them will not need any router; the other side's mac address is discovered using ARP, and then the L2 header is between the two mac addresses. No gateway needed, or ever consulted.

When the switch is running SwOS, it doesn't even have a place to configure a gateway, as it uses a "simplified" mechanism that does not involve a gateway or network mask. It just swaps the source and destination mac addresses and ip addresses and ports in the L2, L3 and L4 headers.

See this thread How do you set system default gateway on SwOS?

Any ideas?
Think @anav links might be a good start.

Probably best approach:
  • Reset with no defaults
  • Create bridge
  • Add all interfaces to bridge
  • Add DHCP client to bridge

These are the basic steps to get a working switch.
Depending on your requirements the tweaking starts from here.

Good to hear you got it working again.

The CRS306-1G-4S+IN isn't really meant to be used as a router, it is a switch with some router capabilities, and those router capabilities are there primarily for you to manage the switch. You would be much better off using the router in the UDM for inter-vlan routing, and then keep your top talkers on the same vlan of the switch, so routing isn't needed. Or buy a RB5009 as your router (that has some switch capabilities).

See the CRS306-1G-4S+IN performance Test Results, and compare the switching packets per second to the routing packets per second. The CPU in the CRS306-1G-4S+IN is 800Mhz with 1 core. That's just over than the original Raspberry Pi from 2012 (that had a single core 700Mhz CPU and 256MB of RAM). The original Pi Zero from 2015 had the same processor BCM2835 as the original Pi, but a newer gen, and it was clocked at 1Ghz and 512MB of RAM.

I have no UniFi routers, but you can find youtube videos on how to setup vlans on the UDM. But the link between the UDM and he CRS306-1G-4S+IN is going to be a bottleneck for any inter-vlan traffic.

What exactly did you mean by "I am trying the routerOs rather than the switchOs so I can hopefully get the SMB portion working to." in the OP? If you are planning to do that with the CRS306-1G-4S+IN, I think you will be disappointed.

Well thanks it all came together I got the Switch/Router showing in the right place I was able to flash the router-os again.

Switch yes I see primary.

The SMB portion I will have mainly Linux computers on the net X 2 a windows computer and I hope unraid server holding all the media thats what the switch is for.
I will be running other computers solely connected to the UDM(unifi)

I had hoped I could use SMB as part of samba but that can wait.

The switch to SwitchOS is where it went wrong the last time, I have to remember where and how to switch now.

Thanks again for all the help.
