Excuse the double post, but after reading through this entire thread and employing some of the scripts that have already been posted. I feel relatively safe putting this out here. Please don't make me regret it.

Please let me know if you guys are able to achieve 10 Gbps symmetrical connections

Hello Garrison1701, I am the owner/operator of the original btest server IPv4 address: 207.32.194.24 & IPv6 address: 2605:4e40:0:1fe::
I just wanted to step in and welcome and it's nice to see another public access btest server on-line.
If you experience any issues or problems, you are welcome to contact me for how I might of delt with the same problem.

Thanks, Tom. I actually just set up a queue for burst at 4 Gbps with sustained speeds at 1 Gbps. Figured it might be bad if it maxed my connection briefly.

Heads up, I had to temporarily power-off the public access btest server I manage.

Here in the U.S. , there are thousands of business every where that have laid-off workers , and many of those workers are now working from home. Additionally, Netflix (and other on-line movie video sources) are getting increased bandwidth usage. In some locations, the Internet is experiencing much greater than normal bandwidth and some ISPs are experiencing problems. To help my ISP/WISP operations, I have temporarily disabled the btest server so that I can divert the normal ( peaking up to 2-Gig btest traffic) bandwidth to my customers.

I promise to return the btest server back on-line just as soon as my network stabilizes and the bandwidth is once again available.
This is the first time in over 4-years I have taken this btest server off-line for anything other than basic maintenance.

Everybody , be safe and take proper precautions to protect your ISP/WISP, business, customer and employees. And consider preparing your network(s) for a possible network increase of anywhere from 5 percent to 75 percent. So far, I am only at an additional 5 percent but I am getting ready for an additional 50 percent increase very soon to hit our networks.

A few minutes ago, I brought my public access btest server back on-line.
It is now running again - however , I reduced the maximum btest throughput (using multiple Simple-Queues) to 100 Meg.

Normally this btest server has has the ability to btest at greater than Gig Internet best speeds.
Because of the Corona virus pandemic and most of my customers now working from home and schooling from home, my ISP Internet bandwidth has jumped an additional 25 percent and sometimes peaks at an additional 150+ percent higher than my normal Internet traffic.

You are again welcome to use my btest server again. I ask that you please please please only perform short btest(s) to my server (because my Internet feeds are currently operating at much greater loads than normal.

Thanks for hosting the server! Just did a test in NJ on Comcast...actually getting more than advertised. I have 300 D/L and seeing 370..I'll take it.! 10 U/L but showing 12...nice...

Moving from DOCSIS 3.0 this weekend to 3.1 so will see if that has any impact at all. I dont expect it to but it will let me know if the newer Netgear is better or worse than my existing Netgear modem

I just rebooted the btest server.
From time to time, the Mikrotik btest server ( on CHR ) will just quit working and the btest service will stop and show un-checked

Here's a tip for those wanting to test bandwidth. Especially if under 1Gbps.

I used my Azure account to create a Windows 10 Pro virtual machine in a region near me with a 1Gbps link.

RDPed into it, disabled the firewall for ease, and downloaded the Mikrotik btest.exe program (https://mt.lv/btest)

Using this, I was able to successfully test the capabilities of my link for as long as I needed, when I needed.

This doesn't take long to setup, and if destroyed afterwards only cost pennies.

Question - Is your Mikrotik behind a firewall ( natted ) and/or is your Mikrotik possibly firewalling inbound connections ( such as btest receive ) ?
Try putting a Mikrotik on a live IP address with no firewall then try running the btest.

Tom/Garrison/all - thank you for your public btest servers and support.

Tom - if I may repeat a question that has been asked multiple times - do I need to be running the same firmware version or main code branch, or is there a minimum firmware? My router is running 6.44.x Must it be on 6.47.x?

I don't know the rule for different versions. I do know that I have experienced btest not working until I would upgrade everything to the latest versions.

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

FYI re the btest server I operate.

I've got a full 10-Gig Internet on order. In about 3 weeks ( give or take ), I will be able to turn up the btest server back to 3-Gig or faster speeds for remote btest throughput testing.

I was forced to seriously decrease the maximum btest speeds to only a few hundred megs a few weeks ago. With the Covid-19 Corona virus here in my service area, my ISP/WISP bandwidth took an instant 300+ percent increase in bandwidth because everybody started working from home ( including the school students ) - which nearly saturated my current available Internet bandwidth.

I can't wait to test a full 10-Gig connection with only one device on the new network and go to www.speedtest.net ( I hope the speed indicator dial says " You are crazy fast !" )

Hello, I want to know how to configure all the sim card slots of my LtAP LTE device kit, it has three sim card slots.
I only have active a one slot, that it is the second slot.
It doesn't let me activate the other two slots, it tells me that "only APN can be local!" And I do not understand because.

Some news , I have my IPv4: 207.32.194.24 IPv6: 2605:4e40:0:1fe:: back on-line again.
EDIT: btest user is --> btest and btest password is --> btest ( btest & btest )
I set the queue to allow btest-ing up to 4-Gig.

Question - Who has a 10-Gig Internet connected Mikrotik I can perform a btest to/from ?
I am now on a 10-Gig connection and I am looking for something to btest to/from so that I can check my 10-Gig connection.

Also - If you are btest-ing to my btest server - Please post your btest speed results , I want to verify It is running up to and over 2 Gig and possibly hitting 4-Gig on the top-end of btest throughput results.

Reply to gotsprings re "can't connect"

Question: What is your IP address ? I will look at my access-lists.
Question: Has this ever worked for you in the past ?
Question: Can you ping 207.32.194.22 ?
Question: I want to verify --> Are you trying to Bandwidth-Test to my Mikrotik BTest-Server IPv4 address of 207.32.194.24 using User: btest Password: btest ?
Question: Is the Mikrotik you are trying to Bandwidth-Test from directly on the Internet and no firewall ? Firewalls can prevent some UDP and/or TCP send and/or receive btest from running.

Hi,
Found my way here from Google.
I have 10Gbps located in Stockholm, Sweden. Using CCR1036-8G-2S+.

Tested on: 38.104.52.187
10sec average: 2.9 Gbps/74.2 Mbps

And also: 207.32.194.24
I achieved 4Gbps both send and receive, however I did not run both at the same time.
Now I can't connect, but I guess (without reading trough every post here) that you have some sort of spam/flood protection that puts me on hold?

I don't have any devices yet that can handle 10Gbps (they are on the way) and I would LOVE to try this beast out on it's full capacity from the router itself.
I could also set up a BTest Server if anyone would like to try against my connection. However, this is a private resident with static IP and I don't want to post my IP here. Private message, if that is possible on this forum would be preferred.

Also a big thanks to everyone here for publishing test servers.
Especially you TomjNorthIdaho.

re: Now I can't connect, but I guess (without reading trough every post here) that you have some sort of spam/flood protection that puts me on hold?

Yes , I do have a Simple-Queue which also uses an Address-List.
My address list has the following types of Names ( types ).
- blocklist - IP address that are blocked from using my btest server ( bad guys who have abused my btest server )
- previous - IP address that have recently used my btest server and are blocked for a couple of hours , then auto released
- tester - IP addresses that are white-listed ( IP address that have unlimited access to my btest server - these are normally my networks that I manage ).

Also - my Simple-Queue limits the maximum speed of all running btest testing to 4-Gig ( all currently running btests at the same time in the 4-Gig rate-limiting queue ). This is to prevent my Internet connection from getting hammered.

I will be building a second private full 10-Gig btest server. If you are interested in performing a full 10-Gig btest , I am open to the idea.

Just installed a CCR1009 on a 1GB fiber connection. Wondering why i get must slower speed test results behind the CCR than just plugged into the fiber modem. Fast.com direct is 900mbps+ and behind the CCR is closer to 550. Ran the bandwidth test built into the router and Mikrotik app for Windows. Got different results there too.

Edit: Figured out that I forgot to enable fasttrack. Now I get full speed to this server when its not bogged down.

Thank you! It works, but from Italy 400/400 effective works only until 200/250.... Perhaps I'm so far...

And while we are testing bandwidth... we might want a refresher on the affects of latency and loss...
Namely where your public test server is located, globally...

@TomjNorthIdaho was testing multi-threaded (30+), you may have seen requests for up to 200 threads (tested the same with public iPerf3 servers to detect if my ISP throttles per thread, which they do), in case your setup/logs thought it was an attacker, + have two ISPs (testing it out).

My ISP's ASN:9829, should be enough for you to figure out which IPs were coming from me.

If you're interested DM me, we can run more thorough tests with multi-threads exceeding the usual 8-20 limit as I have two ISPs (I use 24 threads on client devices and I'm able to pull aggregated bandwidth of both ISPs on the daily).

Re ... Maybe some FQDN can help in long-term? ...
One minor reason I don't use DNS to point to the btest server is that if I renumber ( because of attack or some other renumber reason ) , it won't have the script bots performing automatic btest following me. The script bots are the worst - automatic btest the moment my times-access-list times out , every hour every day every month every year. Yes I can configure firewalls and stuff but I also have a ISP/WISP I am busy running.

Is it working now ? Are you behind a firewall ? Is your Mikrotik running a firewall ? It appears to be working for others.

it was working partially for some minutes. now it's again not working.
my router is directly connected to the Internet. Firewall is running but no output filter.
Perhaps you can see some hints in the log? My IP Starts with 185.

Re; ... it was working partially for some minutes. now it's again not working ...
Have you read my posts about wait periods between tests and continuous testing ?

I have a firewall setting on the btest server which forces the remote btester to do the following:
- Wait between btests
- Prevents continuous and/or consecutive btests

With that said - I just now removed your 185.x.x.x IP address from the must-wait list. It will again auto populate after you run a btest which will again require another wait period.

ridiculous ?

What do you expect for free ?

You are welcome to create your own public btest server , allocate some of your extra gigabits of Internet bandwidth to it and show everybody how you can do it better.

Hello,
Cannot connect...
Happy new year anyway...
Yanncd - your post "... Cannot connect... "

- Is your Mikrotik behind a firewall ?
- Does your Mikrotik have a live outside IP address ( not natted ) ?
- Is your Mikrotik also a firewall ?
- Can you ping IPv4: 23.162.144.120 and/or IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4 ?
- Have you tried TCP send ?
- Did you read through all related btest posts in this forum ?
- Is the ROS software version of your Mikrotik the latest up-do-date version ?

Normally , if you are getting a "can't connect" , then the problem is likely a firewall on your side.

Hi Tom,

I wanted to thank you and at the same time say sorry. I didn't read all the rules and might have been running a couple of tests more than what you asked for (and/or more often than pointed out).

Anyway, Im done with my tests and I got the results I expected, THANKS A LOT for this service !!!

Im running this from Sarchi, Costa Rica (my ip ends with .163.144) and my speed is supposed to be 100/12 Mbps
Screenshot from 2021-01-08 01-40-40.png

Thanks Again,

PS: I might be blocked, and I'd really appreciate if you could unblock me, I promise I read all the instructions now and I'll follow them

By the time I checked to see if the IP address was blocked in the btest server , it had already timed-out and was auto removed. You are good to go for another test.

This is an FYI on the public btest server I operate.

The btest server is actually an x86 ROS server running on a VmWare ESXi server.

I got this x86 ROS server free from Mikrotik many wears ago.

You see, I wrote up an article for how to build a 10-port 10-Gig-per-port Mikrotik x86 router , then posted the how-to in a Mikrotik forum. Well , I guess somebody with Mikrotik was happy and thus I got a free x86 ROS license. ((( Thank you Mikrotik ))).

So now you know where the btest ( x86 ROS ) server license actually came from.

Hi Tom,

Something weird happened yesterday, I was testing a link with just 50/50 for like 10 seconds, I did the test 2 times and the second time I did I could not stop the test, I rebooted the router like so many times but when ever it came online it would start to receive that traffic, I had to block the IP so the client does not get this incoming traffic. May be the test froze on server. Just thought of sharing.

Are you using the newest version of ROS ?
Is your winbox updated to the newest latest version ?

Feb 11'th 2021

I just now updated the public access x86_64 CHR btest server
from ROS v 6.48
to ROS v 6.48.1

IPv4: 23.162.144.120
IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4

btest username: btest
btest password: btest

Note: This btest server is Ping-able. If you can't btest to it, then you might be behind a firewall or running a firewall.
Note: Please keep your btest(s) brief. This function of this btest server is to assist Mikrotik admins in determining and verifying their peak bandwidth throughput.
Note: After a few minutes of brief btest(ing), your remote IP address is auto blocked and will auto-release in about 1-hour. This is to prevent extended long term btest(ing) which is beyond my defined time-limits to perform brief btest(s).

As always, your comments indicating what country/city you are in and your btest results are always welcome ( and interesting ) - thank you.

FYI: This public access btest server is hosted and managed by Tom Jones with Red-Spectrum Communications ( located in North Idaho USA ). The ISP I work for is owned by the Coeur 'dAlene Tribe , which is a Native Sovereign Nation ( .nsn ) located in North Idaho.

Did you know this btest server has been on-line since January 2016 ?

Try the btest during an O-Dark-30 when your network is the least busy ( something like 3:30 AM ). Perform four tests:
UDP down
UDP up
TCP down
TCP up.

If you hit 100-Meg ( both directions ) during an O-Dark-30 but not during normal busy hours , then I would suspect your network or your upstream network may be saturated when the network is normally busy. If this is the case, try this:
- During a most busy time on your network , disable all feeds to customers/servers.
- Perform the above tests
- Re-enable your networks.
If the results are still not what you should be getting, contact your upstream provider.

From your Mikrotik, can you ping 23.162.144.120 ?
Can you try a btest TCP send to 23.162.144.120 ?
If both of the above work but no other test work, then I would suspect a firewall somewhere on your side may be the problem.

What is the public IP address of your Mikrotik ? I can look at my logs and see of you are temp blocked by my btest system.

rosjordi ,
nice - you've got a smoken fast Internet connection ! :)

Questions
- It this test through a home or business Internet connection ?
- Were you able to perform a UDP download btest ?
- Were the btest results what your were expecting ( slower or faster than you should be getting ) ?

Aloha TomjNorthIdaho,
I live in the Russian city of Omsk, the tariff plan is 100 Mbps. I collect data on the bandwidth of the provider's channel. I found an opportunity to test the channel with the help of your service. Here are my test results.

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

FYI - Just thought it may be interesting to know ....

On average , there is always one or two Mikrotik admins somewhere performing a btest to my btest server.
Sometimes I will see the btest server with 5 to 10 different btest connections running.
Sometimes, I will drop the max btest bandwidth limiter settings and see some remote btest hitting close to 10-Gig ( full saturation of my primary 10-Gig internet feed ).

Funny ... somewhere around 6 or 7 years ago ( prior to me putting my btest server on-line ), I proposed a Mikrotik btest day where everybody would post their IP address and btest login/password information. This was a thought to allow all Mikrotik admins test their maximum bandwidth throughput the world everywhere. ---- Well , somebody back then posted a response as what it would be called :
" The day the Internet died "
I think it would of been interesting to discover what would of broken ( so that it could be fixed/upgraded ).

Something I would like to see would be a Mikrotik torrent btest feature. Something that would create the ability for a Mikrotik admin to perform TCP/UDP torrent-btest(s) to dozens or hundreds of remote Mikrotik torrent-btest servers , where the remote torrent-btest servers can be configured with maximum bandwidth settings. So rather than testing to one location, a torrent-btest could be testing to hundreds of torrent-btest servers throughput the entire world.

Well, this is getting fun. I have now blocked 176.0.0.0-201.0.0.0. Sorry for the inconvenience to the rest of my fellow testers.

Best
Try it again , I just cleared out the Address-List of recent testers

LoneRager ,
I just now checked the btest server 30 seconds ago prior to posting this reply.

Yes - the btest server is up and running. When I checked it - there were two different remote btest(s) running ( 100-Meg each btest ). Now a minute later it is idle again.

Can you ping the btest server ?

Try performing a TCP send to the btest server.
Often , when a remote location is behind a firewall , a TCP send will sometimes be the only btest a remote firewall will allow/pass.

I actually have been using TCP.

I wonder if I got banned? I did accidently leave the speedtest running for a few minutes one time. But it seems to be doing it to all my routers, not just that one.

The btest server will throttle down after about 30 to 60 seconds ( depending on how much bandwidth a remote IP is driving the btest server ) then it will auto add the remote IP to an address-list ).
When it is in the address-list, that IP address needs to remain idle ( not connected to the btest server ) for 1-hour. Then after 1-hour of no connections from the remote IP address, the btest server will auto-remote the remote IP address from the address-list.

Right now at this moment , I have 10 IP addresses in the address-list

Here is the traceroute

It seems to die at your provider gateway? From my point of view, since it is multiple different locations/providers from which I cannot access your server, seems to me like a country block by your provider.

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

Thu May 27, 2021 3:12 am

Tested from a WISP on the Central Coast of CA (9m/9m plan)

Download via udp: 0
Download via tcp: Max 9.3, sustained close to that (results were reset by my subsequent test before I logged them)
Upload via tcp: Max 10.x, sustained about 5-6 (trying to troubleshoot this specifically--seems like we're not getting the 9m upload we pay for)
Download+upload combined: about 5-6mbps each

I guess the system blocked me at that point as I tried to run one more and it wouldn't connect. Maybe that first UDP test counted as one of my four allowed tests...

Thanks for offering the service. It allowed me to confirm that I am getting the rated downlink speed (9m) when other speedtest sites (Ookla, etc.) have trouble hitting that mark (guessing my latency/jitter is too high and that keeps those tests from saturating my connection?) and also confirm that my upload isn't where it should be.

Question to those with near 10-Gig Internet connections

In a week or month ( sometime ) , I will be turning up a new additional 10-Gig Internet connection.
Prior to me placing this in my network , I am considering configuring a new 2'nd full 10-Gig wide-open btest server on the new circuit, then allow high-speed, no-throttling and no-timeouts for those who want to perform some btest(s) up to 10-Gig.

This new 2'nd btest server would only be available for about 7 days , then taken off-line when I move this new BGP circuit into my network.

If you are interested , please post so that I know to go ahead and build a 7-day wide-open 10-Gig btest server.

* For me , this is also a way for me to verify my new circuit is working well under load.

I cannot ping the BTest server from any of my locations across Czech republic (all different IP ranges) 93.99.x.x, 217.29.x., 37.11.x.x, 89.176.x.x

Needless to say I cannot run a btest
I suspect you have a firewall at or near your location blocking access.
Would you please reply with a traceroute to the btest server.

North Idaho Tom Jones
Here is the traceroute
Tracert.PNG

It seems to die at your provider gateway? From my point of view, since it is multiple different locations/providers from which I cannot access your server, seems to me like a country block by your provider.

I'm having the same problem (I think). I'm trying to connect from a 1gig fiber link and traceroute dies just upstream of your test server. Any ideas?

Just performed a quick test from Sacramento, CA. My TCP receive throughput hit 1.4Gbps which is my provisioned Comcast/Xfinity downstream.

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

Thu Jun 03, 2021 11:41 pm

Mikrotik btest servers and how I use my btest servers in/for my customers:

I have two Mikrotik btest servers.
#1 , One of them is the public btest server you may already know and use ( IPv4: 23.162.144.120 and IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4 )
#2 , My other non-public btest server is inside my network and behind some firewalls.

When I want to test & verify my customer's bandwidth-rate-limiters are working, I have the customer Mikrotik perform a btest to my #1 outside btest server. For example, if a customer has a 100-Meg-down & 20-Meg-up account , I should be able to btest to the public btest server #1 and see the correct customer bandwidth speeds for both up and down speeds. Testing to this btest server goes through the bandwidth-limiters to shape traffic bandwidth to what the customer account is configured for.
FYI - internally I always add an additional 5-percent to the customer purchased speed settings - thus 100 is actually 105. This allows a 100-Meg customer to use a speedtest on their computer and actually see and measure a little-bit just over 100-Meg. It makes customers happy when they can verify they are actually getting what they are paying for.

The #2 second non-public btest server has no customer rate-limiters. It is wide open. This btest server is capable of btesting at a full 10-Gig to my customers ( no bandwidth or time restrictions ).
I use this btest server to measure what the link to/from my remote customer Mikrotik-CPE is actually able to achieve in bandwidth. Example , if I have a 10-Meg remote wireless customer, I should be able to have the remote Mikrotik perform a btest to my #2 btest server and measure btest throughput speeds much faster than the customer account is actually configured for. So it is possible for a 10-Meg customer Mikrotik-CPE to btest measure speeds far greater than 100-Meg or even Gig speeds when btesting to this server.
By testing and measuring speeds far faster than what my customer accounts are actually configured for, I am able to verify the APs and backhauls are not taxed or saturated. If and when I see throughput tests that are equal or close to the customer purchased account speeds, then I know I need to perform some network upgrades to increase AP and network speeds.

If you operate a WISP/ISP network, something like this can help you know the throughput capabilities of your network - especially during you're most-busy peak hours of customer Internet usage.

Oooo - a un-related foot-note ... Sometime in the last week , this Mikrotik forum topic "Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)" reached two thirds of a million views. That's a lot of views and btesters.

Thank you for your public btest server! I found it really useful. I tried a few tests (now it think my ip is blocked), from my RBD53GR-5HacD2HnD with external LTE mikrotik antenna MTAO-LTE-5D-SQ and 2 x 5meter coaxial cables from UK with EE mobile network, the maximum I could see was just over 32Mbps down and around 20Mbps up. My ping got timed out though. The link to the specific EE antenna tower is -44 dBm

What BTest servers are available today?
I found some on this conversation: some respond to the ping, other do not, anyway I can not connect.
The router is configured as it comes out of the box... just changed the IP address to manage it in my LAN

I am trying to run this test against 23.162.144.120 (user\password btest) on a MikroTik R11e-LTE6.
The BTest server respond to the ping request, but the band test fails (can't connect is the message).
The MikroTik has just the local IP address configured and the LTE APN, of course... no other customizations.

Where am I wrong?

If you you can't btest to my btest server over a period of several different days, then the problem is most likely a firewall config on your router or your ISP's router.

Hi Tom,

Greetings from Ohio!
Since I used the btest for the first time (and Mikrotik), I accidentally ran the test more than a few times while trying to troubleshoot an issue in frustration and now it no longer works, possibly being banned at your end. Would you be able to unblock? I apologize for the inconvenience and Thank you.

The btest server will auto unlock about 1-hour after an IP address is locked.
Try it now

I honestly run speed test to my Vultr hosted CHR instance (since I put maybe the equivalent of a T1 through it on a regular basis) or just run to the office where we have a similar setup.
With that - a note to all Mikrotik admins who btest to the 207.32.195.2 server , I am going to be testing the above changes tomorrow.
I will post a final config and then ask for user input on how well it is performing.

The 207.32.194.2 IP address is an old IP address for the btest server I manage.

The correct and updated IP addresses to this btest server are as follows:

IPv4: 23.162.144.120
IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4

btest username: btest

Hi, just wanted to share some results from argentina. I tested both the 23.x server and the 38.x server. On both, I am getting 650-700 Mbps. This is for download UDP tests. For the 23.x server, I wasn't able to test TCP performance while on the 38.x server, TCP seemed stuck at around 20Mbps (when testing with a single connection or the default 20 simultaneous connections)

Thanks everyone for maintaining these speedtest servers!!! they are a godsend!!

btest notice:

This morning, I moved the public btest server to another VmWare ESXi server.
This is a Mikrotik ROS x86 router ( dedicated for remote btest tests ).
This was running on a VmWare ESXi 6.7.0 hypervisor and was just-now moved to a VmWare ESXi 7.0 hypervisor.

I think the Mikrotik ROS x86 license was properly moved with the ROS x86 btest server to the new physical VmWare ESXi hypervisor.
If you suddenly encounter some seriously slow btest throughput results , please let me know so that I can check & verify the ROS x86 license is correct.
FYI - it is supposed to be --> Level: P10 license

I'm unable to connect to your public server IP 23.162.144.120 using either TCP or UDP. I am using username\password: btest. I simply get the error "cant connect". Do I need to make exceptions in my fire wall for this to work?

Thanks!

Thanks Tom. Funny enough, I needed to use it because I had a power failure last week and after everything was back up and running, I had some network strangeness that I wanted to diagnose using the btest server. Turns out it was a Docker container for my DNS service that I neglected to set to auto-restart. Sigh. Anyway, thanks for the response and for providing this excellent service.

Cheers.

I'm a big fan of complex networks - however ...
I always prefer lots of small, fast easy-to-understand components in the network instead of large do-everything components.
With large do-everything servers, when something fails , then everything fails , which often results in lots of time trying to find out what part of the do-everything server is broken.
With small specialized network components, a server failure is localized to a specific function and any problems are usually is easy to locate and fix.

Sooo, the next time, somebody says , hey lets get a single server that's a switch & router & firewall and everything , I'm going go @#$@#! on somebody.

@North Idaho Tom Jones Many thanks!
2/4/8gb connections are a fairly new product here in NZ for SME and home user market and far and few have got them yet. That's why I looked for a btest server that could give me some figures. You are a legend for offering your server.

I did like the idea of the community globally coming together to offer what they can and with general rules and guidance, people all over the planet can register btest server/client service that would be closer to their geo-location. We can only dream....

You mention GPON

I would like to ask what are your plans with GPON and Mikrotik ?
Are you planning on inserting a SFP GPON module into a Mikrotik with the intention of using the Mikrotik ( with SFP GPON module ) as a remote ONT ( remote client GPON device ) ?
Or - are you planning to use the Mikrotik as a firewall/NAT device behind a 3'rd party ONT ?

Are you currently running btest's ( to/from my btest server ) using a Mikrotik that is behind an ONT or from a Mikrotik that is acting like as a ONT with a SFP GPON module installed ?

We do fiber-to-the-home ( GPON ) , and I have been searching for reliable methods and parts to make a Mikrotik function as an ONT.

I ran some btest's from my 23.162.144.120 public btest server to your 85.57.168.156 server.
I was unable to do a udp send. I am guessing it's likely a firewall config/setting at or near your location.

I updated the public access btest server I maintain from CHR ROS version 6.48.3 to 6.48.4

If you experience any issues/problems with the newer CHR ROS version 6.48.4 version now running on this btest server , please let me/us know.

Thanks for the service. I've been trying to figure out why my RB4011 is slow in a router on a stick configuration and the test servers posted here have been super helpful (still haven't figured out the issue though). Here are my results from Comcast's 1.2 gig plan in Illinois. I'll Test TCP once the server lets me back on.

Edit: Added TCP results

Hi Tom, GPON technology version for fibre here in NZ is only limited to 3 cities and in certain areas only at the moment, with 2/4/8Gb offerings. I have the 4000 offerings.
My setup is a Nokia ONT in bridge mode with my Mikrotik RB4011 as an edge point with SFP+ eth. I did a greater throughput once I went to the pre-release FW 6.49beta54 from initial testing of 1.4/1.5 to 2.5+

lost-packets: 33455

Thanks

How can I limit the bandwidth for the bt server? When I'm playing online games and somebody does a speed test it kills my connection.

I am not sure I understand your question.

Are you asking how to limit bandwidth to the public access Mikrotik btest server I manage ?
- When you run a btest, there is an option to set the bandwidth

I want to limit the btest server to about 900Mbps to have a reservation of about 50Mbps for my permanent traffic, any qos-like way.

Another question is if I can limit the execution time for bandwidth tests to avoid people running tests for hours

My home connection runs over an R11e-LTE6 installed in an RBLHGR. Got this while at least one person was watching netflix, possibly two. We live in Elkmont, AL and if it wasn't for the LTE connection we would be stuck with a 10Mbps down, 512k up dsl connection

Re: ... I shutdown the bt server, it's imposible to play online when anybody do a test. ...

If you are still interested in running a public access btest server , consider what I do to save on bandwidth.
I have a mix of Simple-Queues and Address-Lists.
The Simple-Queues, limit how fast a btest can run ( limit btest traffic so that it does not kill your network when a remote btester is btesting at very fast btest speeds. Also , the Simple-Queues limit how long a remote btest session can run before it limits total btest traffic to a very slow rate.
The Address-Lists , force a time-wait period where a remote btester has to wait until they can run a remote btest again.

If you are interested , I can post an export of my btest server configuration --or-- If you PM me your btest IP address and login info, I could remotely configure it for so that you have a turn-key public access btest server that fits inside your maximum allowable bandwidth specifications so that your network does not hit a bandwidth wall when a fast btester is btesting to your btest server.

On the topic of public access btest servers ...
It would be nice if Mikrotik operated an official Mikrotik public access btest server.
It wouldn't need to support Gig+ btest speeds ( although that would be nice ) . Even it was max rate limited to 10 or 100 Meg peak btest traffic , I bet it would be used.

Edit: And if they were to do this ... It would be nice if they ( Mikrotik ) were to post a working btest server configuration where other network administrators could use this information to build their own public ( or private ) btest servers. Where the btest server has some simple settings to limit Maximum btest bandwidth and Address-Lists ( where the Address-Lists contain a white-list and grey-list for how often a remote btest session can be run from a remote IP address to the hosted btest server ).

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

Hello Tom,

I'm connecting from Johannesburg South Africa.

Thank you for running this server.

Here are my ipv4 results.
Image

Here are my ipv6 results which have been very useful in evaluating the ipv6 performance on my rb3011 as I cannot find a local ipv6 capable bandwidth or speedtest ipv6 server, I can see some substantial packet loss when routing over Cogent's network which I will speak to my ISP about.

Kind regards
Stefan

Hey Tom, you are almost Canadian! ;-)
I would come visit but its just like visiting any Province............. not like let say the Red Rock of Sedona Arizona which cannot be experienced just anywhere.
However, I could be convinced! What are some of the attractions in your neck of the woods,

Around xmas, I get easily distracted.

* Are you able to ping my public access btest server ?

* If you can ping it, are you able to do a TCP send to my server ?

* In looking at your traceroute , it appears you are behind a NATted/firewall router. This might be your problem if you can't receive UDP packets.
* Normally , I suggest a remote btester testing my my btest server to use a Mikrotik router with a Live-IP-Address and no firewall rules.
** Also , wait several minutes between btest tests. My btest server allows a minimum amount of connections/bandwidth to each remote btest user , then the remote btest admin will be btest blocked for up to 1-hour ( forced to wait between btests ). I do this to protect my Internet feed to my ISP business so that I am not saturated with sustained 3-Gig traffic which can have a negative effect on my business.

anav , are you getting much of our North Idaho snow up there in Canada ?
Do your outdoor towers look like this picture ? At least you can still see that it is a tower. How many normal size APs can you count on the tower ? ( hint more than a dozen ).

Some quick stats. I wasn't able to get through with IPv4, only IPv6.

Device: RB5009UG+S+IN
Location: Des Moines, Iowa, United States
Ports: Internet in ether1, LAN in ether2
Expected service (residential): 1Gbps down/50 Mbps up

Test results:
Tx/Rx Current: 57.1 Mbps/942.5 Mbps
Tx/Rx 10s Average: 57.3 Mbps/942.3 Mbps
Tx/Rx Total Average: 60.5 Mbps/941.8 Mbps

Thanks for hosting the test server!

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

Fri Jan 14, 2022 3:49 pm

As soon as I try to use btest with this server on ipv4 (23.162.144.120) the test starts, then just sits 'running' but with no numbers coming through, and then it looks like I am firewalled - I no longer receive ICMP ping replies.

Have tried from two different routers at different locations / IP addresses just now.

In both cases I am behind a Draytek 2860. I have all the DDOS defence stuff turned off though.

I have just tried from home. Same ISP, but no Draytek in the way, and it works from here. Strange.

Any ideas?

Depending on where you start with the test, you can sometimes generate that much traffic that you are effectively saturating your connection completely.
I am not sure anymore where I saw it but recommendation was to leave at least "some" % of your bandwidth available for "other" traffic when passing LAN (such as your management connection, a ping, ...whatever)
I've seen it as well, even to the point winbox simply disconnected when I hit "start". At that time I had a powerline with at best 90mbs bandwidth. A test with a stupid mAP (100Mb eth) towards Hex over that powerline was enough to blow the pipes (I do have replaced that connection with proper CAT6 in the mean time, yes).

If you're running the test directly from a device which is connected to the internet, this should not be a problem. Which is what you are seeing.
You're not saturating your LAN connection then.

Try to set a limit in local TX speed, just a bit under your max bandwidth on your local network when passing LAN.

Tested on January 25th 2022, results are Tx 94.6 Mbps Rx 81.9 Mbps. This test server is a proof that it's my provider who's limiting my connection to 100 Mbps, not my router (I'm paying for 600 Mbps now).

Whoa - one moment here ...

If/when you are performing a btest using tcp , there is normally a Ack/Nak delay response time. This is more apparent when there are many hops and/or great distances between your Mikrotik and the remote Mikrotik you are btest-ing to/from with tcp. This is because there are Acks required to be send & received to receive the next packet. ( note - there will be Ack/Nak packets between every layer-3 router to the next layer-3 router in all of the layer-3 hops to your device ( probably a similar layer-3 router hop path when using a traceroute )

If/when you are performing a btest using udp , there no Ack/Nak packets that need to be sent or receives. In general , udp is a fire ( send ) and forget. Thus when using a Mikrotik btest ( udp ) , the send & receive test results may show faster throughput ( because you are not waiting for Ack packets ).

However , in your case , if you have a 600 Meg Internet connection , you should be able to expect something faster than 100 Meg on a btest. Have you checked to verify all of your ethernet connections are 1-Gig connections and that nothing on your side has a 100-Meg Ethernet connection.

From the Philippines, 500/500 fiber. This is on ipv6. It seemed to only test TX. I tried a second test for Receive later, but it wouldn't connect.

I also tried the ipv4 test, but it was really slow, and when I tried a second time (after more than 5 minutes) it wouldn't connect again.

Are you testing using UDP ?
What type Mikrotik are you using ?
If using a CHR , what is your Interface speed and license ?

Good Day!
I'm trying to connect to IPV4 23.162.144.120 using either tcp or udp and I keep getting a can't connect error. I just upgraded my ISP connection to 1Gb and am trying to see if I'm actually getting anywhere near that. Could it be something in my firewall rules?

Thanks for providing this great service!

- Can your Mikrotik ping 23.162.144.120 ?
- Is your Mikrotik also a firewall ?
- Is your Mikrotik behing a firewall ?
- What are the first three numbers of the outside Internet facing IP address ?
- What country are you in ?
- Have you tested all four combinations of btest ( udp-send & udp-receive & tcp-send & tcp-receive ) and did any of these test work ?

Hi Tom, thanks for the quick reply.
I cant ping 23.162.144.120, it times out. I am trying to ping from the WAN interface.
It is also a firewall, I've tried disabling the custom rules I added to no effect. The only other rules in the table are defconf.
External IP is 99.255.71.X /23
Canada
All 4 tests time out.

Hmmm - can't ping ....
- can you ping 8.8.8.8
- can you ping www.yahoo.com
- You are able to get on to the Internet and pull up web pages through the Mikrotik ?
- Please supply a traceroute to 23.162.144.120

My btest server should always answer a ping. I suspect there is a firewall somewhere near your side of the Internet. Based on your pings and traceroute , I may be able to figure out where the issue is.

Hmmm , for the heck of it , I rebooted my Mikrotik CHR btest server ...

What are you getting for speed ?
Be sure not to run to long of a btest server ( about 5 to 10 seconds - just enough time to see what it is peaking at ).
Note : UDP is a pretty good indicator for what your Internet pipe size is.

Curiouser and curiouser....
I can't connect again. Ping is also timing out.
Traceroute stops at 23.162.144.1

Is it somehow blacklisting me? I ran a couple of tests shortly after it came online for me, tcp and UDP both worked but were not 5 minutes apart.

Online and flying. Getting 31Mb Upload, 953Mb down. Before in the brief time it was working it was around 180mb down.

I killed the test after about 20 seconds, let me know if you'd like me to run again.

FYI - the btest server does have a time-out setting , where after about a minute it will no longer btest with your Ip address , then after a timeout period , it will again allow a btest from your IP.

Still able to ping. I havent kicked the test off again, the last run showed I am getting the promised speeds so if you want, I'm happy to run again, but it looks like it's running now from this end.

Sure - do a 15 second udp download - wait 10 seconds - then do a 15 second udp upload

Thank you. I definitely don't want to overstay my welcome on the server. It is interesting that it not only allowed me to connect but the speed was much higher than the time before, I guess that could also be a lack of congestion on my end, although I dont know if anything radically changed on my network in the interim.

Thanks for the quick help on this, I do appreciate it. Let me know if you'd like me to do anything further if additional troubleshooting is called for.

You have good download speed - however your upload speed sucks.
In my opinion , it looks like your ISP sets your upload speed at 3-percent of your download speed ( 30 / 1000 = .03 )
I often see that when an ISP configures upload speed at less than 5 percent of the download speed , that it creates problems with TCP/IP ack/nack protocols , which ends up slowing TCP download speeds to far slower than the download speed should support. On my customer bandwidth settings , I never go less than 10-persend and prefer 20-percent.

Very interesting. I just reviewed my internet package details and it says right in the description, up to 30Mb upload speeds, so apparently I am getting the speeds they are promising (at least on udp). I just tried to run a quick tcp test and I'm unable to connect again. Traceroute stops at 23.162.144.1.

Hi Tom,
I've got an upgrade to 25Gbps from my provider and had following btest results:
Location: Zürich, Switzerland
Device: CCR2004
Average (udp):
Tx: 3.1 Gbps
Rx: 499.4 Mbps

Average (tcp):
Tx: 697.1 Mbps
Rx: 226.1 Mbps
(There have been more than 100k lost packets, so I guess, the path between us has its limits.)
Cheers

Thank you Tom for your service! I'm new to Mikrotik with my RB5009UG+S+, currently running ROS 7.1.3 and on a 1gbps residential service in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Test results:
March 10 - UDP both directions 10s avg - 808 Mbps tx / 783 Mbps Rx
March 11 - UDP both directions 10s avg - 824 Mbps tx / 937 Mbps rx

I have not been able to perform a tcp test, it tries to connect but then disconnects. I will keep trying over the next couple of days.

Thank you for operating this service, its really helpful.
I only tested IPv4, my address 167.179.216.63 in Wellington, New Zealand. I'm on a UFB (fibre network in NZ) using Nova Energy as the ISP, on a 950 Mbps down / 450 Mbps up plan. Testing from my IGW which is a RB4011iGS+RM running ROS 7.1.1.

I got max: 534.0 Mbps TX using UDP but after a 10-15 sec test I can't connect anymore.

I really should have brought the RB5009 but it was only just released when I ordered.

Hi Tom,
to provide something else then all those Road Runners trying to break lightspeed barriers.
Snails also have a place on this planet

Just used your server to test an SXT LTE 4G connection 930km away from me 8)
Used TCP instead of UDP to avoid choking the pipe completely (hence also loosing connection from where I am sitting now).
Transmit test was unsuccessful (status kept showing "connecting"). Not a biggy.

I got avg 19Mb down during the test.
All this for 90Gb and 10 EUR per month whereas a best-case 8Mb ADSL connection in that area would have cost me at least TENFOLD !

PS I did want to test that transmit part so used btest tool to my home router (from CAP AC over SXT towards home-ISP and then Hex).
Over wireguard I got 3Mb up and 16Mb down, which also indicates there is little overhead using Wireguard, it seems...

Hi Tom,
Is the server down atm? It stands on status "Connecting" all the time, and the traceroute stops at 23.162.144.1 that I suppose, 'cause your btest is .120 , is always an ip of yours and on the same network.
Am I wrong or it works without problem and is just my problem?

I just now rebooted the btest server.
I see there are some remote btest(s) running to/from other Mikrotik admins.

Can you ping the btest server ?
In the past , have you ever been able to btest to/from this server ?
Try using tcp ( send then a receive ).
Is your Mikrotik behind a firewall and/or is it a firewall ?

MikroTik Server, go to the tools> Bandwidth test menu. In the newly-opened window you will see some options: Test To: Destination IP address that you want to see the bandwidth with. Protocol: select the test protocol such as UDP and TCP.

To all of those who have posted a "Thank you" - You are welcome.
+1 Thank You here! Unlike the public speedtest servers, I can trust your server isn't shaping traffic to get end-users off the ISP's backs.

(PM me, please- it doesn't look like I can PM you directly and I have a question. Thanks)

Well, that explains that :)

I just wanted to know if Tom's blacklist was automatic, or does he manually ban IPs if the logs show someone overusing the server; I'd like to experiment with some settings on my end and wanted to run multiple tests.

... and "Bandwidth Test" REALLY needs a time-limit option! One of my machines is remote and I access Winbox via VNC; if the test eats of all the bandwidth it may be hard to hit the "Stop" button. I'm sure I'm not the only one requesting this (and yeah, I've seen the "Safe Mode" workaround, but that's kind of a last-ditch effort).

I'm sure I'm not the only one requesting this (and yeah, I've seen the "Safe Mode" workaround, but that's kind of a last-ditch effort).
The btest server that I operate here has the following features/functions:
- Maximum bandwidth setting
-->> 4-Gig peak traffic for a limited amount of traffic/time
-->> The faster the btest session is , the sooner the limited amount of time expires
-->> When the limit is reached , several things happen. The maximum bandwidth is auto-reduced to 512 Meg maximum
- The btest server will then allow just enough time to measure your btest peak throughput speeds ( so be brief and quick on your btest-ing ).
- The btest server will then place your IP address in a firewall-address-list. When your IP address is in this list , you can no longer btest with my btest server.
- IP address in the firewall-address-list will timeout in about 1-hour. After the timeout period , your IP address is auto removed from the firewall-address-list and you can btest again.

* sometimes I will see btesters who perform scripted btests to my btest server. It's easy to spot them because they are like clockwork and repeatedly do btest on what ever schedule they configured. From time to time , I will look for the automatic btesters that are always btesting in a manner that appears to be a schedule , when I find them , I will simply just block their IP address.

I do the above maximum limits and automatic blocking & automatic un-blocking because I am an ISP. with lots and lots of customers on my networks. I set the maximum peak btest limits to spare capacity I have on my Internet feeds. I don't want my btest server to hamper my customer networks and I don't want my btest server to hamper other ISP networks.

So , in summary , if btest to my server did work and then suddenly it is not working , then try again an hour to two hours later.

OK, thanks for the params, I'll do my best to work within them (and the option to PM you my IP/IP6 addresses so you'd know I'm not a Bot was what I was going for).

I'm only getting ~1/2 the published DL/UL on a hEX connected to 1G symmetrical AT&T Fiber, and I'm convinced it's their end, either routing, or in-transit packet loss, Their gateway (which you can't get around any more) runs semi-regular speed tests from my node to their servers and claims to get full (even overprovisioned) speeds, but while I'm effectively running 1G UP/DN (I pay for 2G as to not starve out the rest of the household) I rarely see more than ~500Mbit in either direction, with IPv6 having even less thruput (UDP iPerf tests on IPv6 easily lose 20-50% of their packets when testing > 500M, which doesn't happen on IPv4). I've got a NAS on it so the thruput is a necessity.

I have an RB5009 with 1G D/35M U cable and I get (and can see) the full 1.2G/35M I'm paying for, so now I at least know I have a reliable testing site to do comparisons with (ruling out the hEX itself, for example).

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

Heads-Up notice

I made some configuration firewall changed to the btest server I operate and manage.
IPv4: 23.162.144.120
IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4
btest username: btest
btest password: btest

The new configuration allows for a window of 10-minutes for remote admin btesting. The 10-minute timer starts on your first btest connection to my btest server.
Note: During the 10-minute window , you have 10-minutes to complete your btesting ( send & receive / udp & tcp ).

After you perform your btest-ing , you must wait a period of greater that 24+ hours ( the next day ).
If you attempt another btest inside of the must-wait period , two things will happen:
1, You will not be able to btest
2, You will have several days or weeks auto-added to your must-wait period. So from your point of view ( if you attempt a 2'nd btest in less than 24+ houirs ) , it will look to you that the btest server is off-line for several days ( or weeks).

Why I made these changes and my conditions to use this btest server:
Note; To use this Mikrotik public access btest server , you agree to the following terms and conditions:
#1 - You will not use or create any automatic btest scripts on a timed schedule to automatically perform btest(s) to this btest server.
#2 - You will not run extended btest(s) to this btest server which last longer than 30 seconds.
#3 - The use of this btest server is only permitted to perform btest(s) inside a 10-Minute window.
#4 - You will never use this btest server to create a degrading bandwidth sustained load on your up-stream Internet provider.
#5 - You agree that I ( the owner/operator ) of this btest server may post your remote btest IP address(s) you used to test to my btest server.
#6 - All btest(s) you perform to this btest server will always be performed using a hands-on procedure without the use of any automated scripts.
#7 - You will never attempt a "dude" connection to this btest server.
#8 - You may perform multiple btest(s) inside a 10-minute window per each 24-hour period
#9 - Your btest(s must be completed inside a 10-minute window.
#10 - Failure to follow the above listed requirements may result in actions on my part to permanently ban/block your IP addresses from my networks and this btest server.
#11 - I ask ( not required ) , that you share in this Mikrotik forum what country/city your are located in and your btest throughput results.
#12 - You understand these terms and conditions and you understand the purpose of this btest server is to assist all Mikrotik admins in determining the status/throughput capabilities of the networks they manage.

Failure to follow these simple above listed request will automatically trigger my firewall rules to auto-block your btest access to my btest server for several days.

Additional notes:

The btest server I operate is being heavily abused by many admins who have configured automatic script schedules to perform btest(s) to my btest server. My btest server is not intended to be automatically tested against on a script schedule to measure your Internet upload/download speed performance every day of the year !

In a single 7-day period , I am able to detect over 50+ different IP address performing automatic script btest(s) to my server. It's pretty easy to identify them by looking at their repeating time window between btest sessions.

I hatted to do this - but I will not accept automatic script btest(s) , I do not want to degrade my bandwidth to my customers or your ISP's bandwidth.

... while I understand, I'm sometimes forgetful- and hope your ban period is an exponential-backoff kind of thing (i.e., if I slip up once or twice, I only lose a day!)

Hell, you should take PayPal for temporary whitelisting (I'm serious!). Your tests have been very helpful to me recently (and MikroTik; turns out I need something faster, so had to go buy another unit 😁)

PayPal - thought about it - something more carrier grade ...
but naw ... I am the kind of person that likes to get and receive things for free when ever possible. - Hence -- the reason I don't use any Windows servers in my ISP business , instead I used Linux servers --- free and zero zilch nadda license fees - no matter how big the server is. Kinda almost the way I also feel about bandwidth testing , it's great when it's not abused.

Quick fyi-update on the new configuration changes to help prevent cron / script / automatic / timed btest checks to my btest server:

over 350 unique IP address are in btest-jail for 7+ days because each remote IP address was detected to be on an automatic timed btest schedule that was running without a human manually performing the btest speed tests.

BAM - 400 IP addresses out of 7-day btest jail.

Quick notes - limit total testing time to less than 10 minutes.
You must wait about 27 hours until you can btest again.
If you attempt to btest more than 10 minutes , then you go to btest jail for 7+ days until you can btest again
If you attempt to btest without waiting 27 hours , then you go to btest jail for 7+ days until you can btest again.
If you attempt to btest and you are in 7-day btest jail , then you reset 7-day btest jail back to 7+ days.

* I had to make these setting to flick off the abusers who are using automatic scripted btest(s) to my btest server day after day after day ( automatic remote btesters multiple times during the day every day of the year )

TBH, this is a perfect example of why this board needs a PM facility; Tom could have solicited IPs for testing via PM and given them N-hours of lifetime

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

May 10'th 2022 :
Hundreds of Mikrotik admins have configured automatic btest script schedules to automatically btest to the btest server I operate and manage.
Automatic btests on a schedule are not acceped and are against my conditions to btest my btest server.
My btest server is averaging 1 to 4 Gig of sustained btest traffic that is to & from hundreds of remote locations every hour of every day.
To prevent the abuse of automatic schedules of btest(s) to my server and reduce btest bandwidth on my ISP networks ;
I have made the following changes to the btest server:

IPv4: 23.162.144.120
IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4
btest username: MikrotikBtest
btest password: MikrotikBtest
* The old btest/btest user/password has been removed

Quick notes - limit total testing time to less than 10 minutes.
You must wait 27 hours until you can btest again.
No automatic btest scripts on a timed schedule are permitted.
All btest must be manually performed by a human.
Repeated login failures using the old btest/btest user/password may auto place your IP address in a 7-Day btest jail.

Note: Please read all of my conditions prior to using my btest server.

Note: If necessary , I will create a subscription based btest server and/or generate a new btest password 24 hours.
To the thousands of Mikrotik admins who have followed my terms and conditions to use this btest server - Thank You

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

Related and somewhat un-related to this btest forum topic:

I assume that many ISPs and WISPs here in the United States have heard and read about the Biden administration plans to expand free high-speed Internet access to 40% of American families.
This is known as the : federal Affordable Connectivity Program

I believe the reporting requirements and testing requirements are the same or similar what is documented in the "Performance Measures Module User Guide" from the "Universal Service Administrative Co.".

In the nutshell :
If your ISP / WISP participates ( to get some of this federal money ) , then you will be required to make these additions to your networks for your customers participating in this program:
- A random selection of your customers in this program are selected by the federal government.
- You are then required to do the following measurements every day starting at 6-PM until midnight ( noted below ):
- Every 60 seconds you will need to have the customer CPE/router/device send 3-pings and receive 3-Pings to a ASN network ( BGP peer ).
- Every 10 minutes , you will need to have the customer CPE/router/device perform an upload speed test for 10 to 15 seconds.
- Every 10 minutes , you will need to have the customer CPE/router/device perform a download speed test for 10 to 15 seconds.
- If the customer network is busy , ( over 32-k bytes or 64-k bytes ) then you retry/retest every 60 seconds until the test(s) can be completed without any customer traffic before or during the test.
- Depending on the ISP enrollment and customer enrollment , download speeds must be tested & verified at 25-Meg or 100-Meg ( depending on the plan ).
- All results are logged into CSV files which are then periodically uploaded to the federal government.
- All latency tests and all speed tests must be performed against an ASN network ( aka BGP peer ).

My ISP is already participating in this program. It took me a little over a month to write up the required test programs to perform the required tests and CSV logging. For the speedtests , I am using Mikrotik's btest to perform the necessary up/down bandwidht speed tests to a ASN ( BGP peer ).
I am testing bandwidth speeds and latency to/from my CHR btest server ( hence one of the reasons why I am stating no automatic script testing to my btest server ).

Sooo, I have some questions:
- Are there any interested ISPs / WISPs who want to participate in the same program to get federal money but don't have the resources or a ASN to ping & speedtest to ?
- Would you be interested in ( me ) my ISP hosting a speedtest server or hosting the entire set of test programs to perform the required tests to/from a government random selection of your customers who are in this program ?

I am not interested in selling my programs , however we are considering starting a subscription service to other ISPs/WISPs who may want to be in this program and receive federal money towards your customers who are in this program.

If your ISP is not in this program , you can be assured that your competition will be and they will be looking for any method possible to get your customers.

Any thoughts ?

Sensible move, both the blocking and opening the door for " sponsored" access.

Well , from the beginning when I started this btest server on Jan 27, 2016 , I have always stated no automatic scripted btests are to be performed to my btest server.
When an ISP/WISP or admin creates an automatic btest schedule to my btest server which runs every hour and/or every day of the year , then that remote admin has created a waist of my bandwidth resources and I can not simply give away 1 to 4 gig of sustained btest bandwidth. Thus the reason for the recent posts about the btest server.

My later post about subscription is indirectly btest related. My post was intended to be a feeler to identify if there may be a market for a set of programs I recently created which perform the required tests and measurements so that an ISP might be able to participate in the federal program to get reimbursements to/for the ISPs customers who are participating in this program where the ISP might not have the programming resources and/or an ASN to test to/from as required.

I am not trying to be a salesman , but I do manage and operate an ISP and as such I/we are often reviewing what products and services are wanted.

Just performed a test using your server;
I'm located just south of Seattle, WA, USA; Comcast/Xfinity is my ISP.
I was getting about 280MBit/s down, and 11.9MBit/s Up to you. Which is in line with what my ISP should be providing me.
Thank you for making a public server available for this. it's much appreciated!

May 16'th 2022 - ICMP Ping has been disabled. to/from this btest server.
This was done to prevent ping-speed tests against this btest server.

I added an additional firewall rule to the btest server to now drop ICMP ping traffic.
ICMP pings are now denied for two reasons:
- #1-of-2 ; It appears there are several servers & networks that are pinging the btest server on a regular repeating timed schedule.
From my point of view , it appears some admins are pinging to my btest server using a repeating scripted schedule to test if their remote network(s) is/are reaching the Internet.
This is/was a waste of my bandwidth.
- # 2-of-2 ; It appears there are several servers that are now running ping-speed ( instead of btest ) using a scripted repeating schedule against my btest server ( to measure their remote Internet bandwidth by using ICMP ).
This is/was a waste of my bandwidth.

Got my fiber upgraded to 10gbit today (why? cause they charge the same as for 1gbit , coincidentally true for 25gbit too but that is let's say annoying to route). the ISP, init7.ch, is generally thought to deliver on their promises (they even have a domestic customer on 25gbit fiber running the fastest speedtest node nearby) so wanted to see what my RB5009 is capable of.

Turns out, with 50 TCP streams, I max out your CPU (sorry about that, only did so for 20s) while mine is at 50-60% at around 1300mbps tx, 250 rx. UDP didn't work.

As the RB5009 is realisticalyl gbit clients only, I can't use a client and I guess the question has not really been answered,

You could try to locate multiple btest servers and try multiple btests at the same time. - that is if you can find enough btest servers to be able to add up to 40-Gig.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for making this resource available. I'm in Las Vegas, Nevada. My office receives service from a WISP called lv.net. I'm contracted for 25M/5M - and it looks like that's what I'm getting.

Hi,

Thank-you. I just tested our new fiber drop for ~30 seconds down then up...seems your setup worked perfectly.

Quick question...does my testing for a total of under a minute then stopping the testing mean waiting 27 hours to the next ability to test? I don't want to be an abuser with your server, but I am making adjustments to my 'tik, and would like to see the results as I go.

Info:
When testing , you should have up to a 9 minute window for btest(s). To be safe , limit your btest(s) in a 5-minute window and limit the btest to if possible a max of 30 seconds per test ( udp/tcp send/receive ) each test.
After your window, you must wait 27 hours. Anything sooner than 27 hours will put you in btest jail.
When in btest jail, you need to wait 7 days ( over 7 days ).
If you btest when you are already in btest jail , then the btest jail waiting period starts over again at 7 days.

Hello, Tom!
Please, check, if IP 92.43.155.117 (Russia, Moscow) is blacklisted or halted. Meybe was trying to connect using old credentials (didn't reach the latest post w/ updated ones).
Thank you!

Re: Public-Mikrotik-Bandwidth-Test-Server(s)

Heads up

I just now upgraded the btest server
From: CHR ROS version 7.3.1
To: CHR ROS version 7.4

** All btest jails are now empty/cleared again. Everybody gets a fresh/new btest up to 10-Minutes - then you will need to wait for 25+ hours ( read my notes below ).

IPv4: 23.162.144.120
IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4
btest username: MikrotikBtest
btest password: MikrotikBtest

Quick notes - limit total testing time to less than 10 minutes.
You must wait 27 hours until you can btest again.
No automatic btest scripts on a timed schedule are permitted.
All btest must be manually performed by a human.
Repeated login failures using the old btest/btest user/password may auto place your IP address in a 7-Day btest jail.

**** This btest server has the capabilities to perform brief btest(s) up to 4-Gig throughput

Failure to follow these simple above listed request will automatically trigger my firewall rules to auto-block your btest access to my btest server for several days.

Hi Tom
do you have other Hardware for 10-Gig btest-ing? With the btest on 23.162.144.120 the "Remote CPU Load" showed 100% when reaching about 3.6Gbps - your current router might not do more. For the moment I don't need 10-Gig testing, but in case you are planning to do so, I just wanted to let you know about this possible limitation.
Cheers

I have lots of other hardware, some much much faster.
I limit btest-ing to around 3.6 Gig maximum peak ( because I am an ISP with thousands of customers. I do not want to saturate one of my 10-Gig BGP feeds with btests.

Thanks for hosting this server. With a 1G/1G residential fiber connection in Western Washington, I was able to achieve 944.8 Mbps/940.2 Mbps when using UDP. If I switched to TCP, my speeds dropped to 920.2 Mbps/434.6 Mbps. I did notice that remote CPU load was at 98% so I suspect this was a CPU bottleneck, not a bandwidth limitation.

I tested a total of 3 times for about 30 seconds each within the 10 minute allowed window. Hopefully this is OK, I was a little confused as to the rules.

It mostly depends on how you have a wan1 and wan2 configured.
If Wan2 is an automatic fall-back if/when Wan1 goes down , then simply disable/turn-off Wan1 then perform the btest.

Just now performed a firmware upgrade on the public btest server.
from: ROS ver 7.5
to: ROS ver 7.6

I can only get tests of around 80mbps. But to neterra 87.121.0.45 I get around 500mbps

Testing from Kearney, MO.

I was testing using a CCR 1072.
I was able to push around 2.5g using UDP.
The download would not do anything unless I chose to do both directions and then it was only getting about 200 meg.

We are currently on a 5-gig DIA.

I will be trying again in a few days.

Hi All, (First post in the forum)

I'd be interested in bringing my CCR online as a test server at home, after reading through this topic and registering to reply.

I have a symettrical 1Gbps at home (About 925Mbps Up/Down maximum due to Ethernet Cable termination from ISP)

I've been working on some config but would like some help to test, would people be interested in another server being online?

I'd enable longer testing periods, but would like to limit total testing bandwidth to 850Mbps, to leave a little for me :-)

I'm thinking 2hrs per test, 24hour wait for another test. (Need help forming the Queue rules and correctly understanding the timers in firewall raw.)

Could anyone help with this?

The config I have so far related to enabling this on the CCR is as below:

/ip firewall raw
add action=accept chain=prerouting comment="testers accepted" disabled=yes src-address-list=tester
add action=drop chain=prerouting comment="previous testers drop" disabled=yes src-address-list=previous
add action=add-src-to-address-list address-list=tester address-list-timeout=2h chain=prerouting comment="add to tester" disabled=yes dst-port=2000-2100 protocol=tcp
add action=add-src-to-address-list address-list=tester address-list-timeout=2h chain=prerouting comment="add to tester" disabled=yes dst-port=2000-2100 protocol=udp
add action=add-src-to-address-list address-list=previous address-list-timeout=24h chain=prerouting comment="add to previous" disabled=yes dst-port=2000-2100 protocol=tcp
add action=add-src-to-address-list address-list=previous address-list-timeout=24h chain=prerouting comment="add to previous" disabled=yes dst-port=2000-2100 protocol=udp

/tool/bandwidth-server> print
enabled: yes
authenticate: yes
allocate-udp-ports-from: 2000
max-sessions: 100

If there is interest for this, I'll continue, would like to be able to make use of all that spare bandwidth!

Cheers
Dan

This morning , I got a FaceBook question from somebody asking if the btest server was on-line.

Hmmm, I just now took a look. The BW Test server was on-line , however the BTest Server Settings somehow was no longer checked ??? I rebooted the server and it came back with the setting checked again. Go figure ... I have seen this a few times where the BTest Server Settings for some un-known reason become un-checked. This is the first time I have seen this happen on a CHR running v7.6

You can use a routers trial on vault and simply pay for the day or 2 usage you require. This way you'll get a server local to you.
Can someone flesh out what this means? I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with my upload speeds and don't mind paying for a service for a couple of days.

Please read some of my posts reguarding how to use the public access bandwidth servers I maintain:

IPv4: 23.162.144.120
IPv6: 2605:6340:0:1b::4
btest username: MikrotikBtest
btest password: MikrotikBtest

To test bandwidth to my bandwidth speedtest server , you should have the following:
- A Mikrotik router
- Your Mikrotik router needs a live IP address ( for proper UDP and TCP bi-directional speed testing )
- No firewalls configured on your Mikrotik ( or some custom additions to your firewall rules - for proper UDP and TCP bi-directional speed testing )
- Read my postings about time limits to avoid being auto placed in the btest-jail ( because your btest session was not brief and/or multiple btest attempts ).
- If ( if ) you have firewalls enabled -and- if you do not have a live-IP-address , then you might still be able to perform possibly only 1 test out of 4 possible tests ( depending on your firewall rules).

Tests:
UDP send
UDP receive
TCP send
TCP receive

I appreciate the offer, but since I don't really know what I'm doing, I think I need more than a 10 minute window every day to test. That's why I was wondering if there was something I could pay for for a couple of days.

Well , here is a potential hardship for anybody offering a Mikrotik btest speedtest server:
If/when you perform a lengthy btest and/or a high-speed btest to another ISP's btest server ( such as mine ), the bandwidth speed load you are able to achieve while performing a btest will also create an equal bandwidth speed load on the other ISP's network you are speedtest btest-ing to/from.

Example , if you have a full 10-Gig Internet connection and you want to btest many times a day - every day , then the remote ISP's bandwidth will keep getting hammered with bandwidth traffic to & from your network.

Most ISP's ( including my ISP ) , have to pay for their bandwidth and cannot simply just give away free bandwidth ( including my networks ).

One solution for your needs to have high speed access to a frequently used btest server out on the Internet is :
- Get a second high-speed Internet account or purchase a high-speed account with a hosting service ( with at least one Live-IP address and the necessary bandwidth you need for btest-ing to/from )

Question: How fast to you want to be able to test to ? How often ? What is your desired total bandwidht load testing per day ?

How do you set one of these up that's not public but can be used internally for company use?

I did test your server from two remote locations (FL, OH). Both did work at the time, but I can no longer connect. That said, I swear that I did my best to stay away from exceeding the 10 minutes and followed the rules mentioned above. How can I tell if I inadvertently exceeded my time limit? I am trying to proof one of my customers that the MikroTik router is just fine and most likely it is their ISP. Thank you in advance!

If you are wanting to setup an internal ( not exposed to/from the Internet ) btest server , just connect a Mikrotik router ( one one Ethernet cable needed ) to the LAN/inside of your network. Then go to the Mikrotik Winbox->tools->BTest-Server and click the Enabled box -- Presto you have a btest server for your inside network.

You would btest from another Mikrotik router inside your network to the new btest Mikrotik router inside your network. Login: admin Password ( what you set your password for ).
Note: This new Mikrotik btest server would allow you unlimited ( no timeouts ) for Mikrotik devices in your network to test against your inside btest server.

I just now cleared the btest-jail Address-Lists
So you are no longer in btest-jail ( at least at the moment just now that I cleared the btest-jail lists ).
