Crackling sound on boot, instead of a beep - RB433AH

Thu Mar 09, 2017 12:06 am

Greetings,

I've upgraded my RB433AH with latest RtOS and latest firmware 3,24.
Decided to add a 1GB micro SD card for a backups/files.
After the first boot the card was not recognized, after the second boot the device is making a one time crackling sound, instead of the normal beep.
Removed the micro SD card and now there's a bootloop with this same crackling sound. The boot procedure is looping without being able to finish (two beeps).
Also the board won't boot at all if there aren't any miniPCI cards installed in at least one of the 3 slots.
Tomorrow I'll try to revive the board with serial cable and netinstall.
The micro SD card is working fine in the card reader of my laptop. I also formatted the card in the reader.

What could be the reason?
Is the board's hardware failed, or it could be a software issue?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a hardware issue, have you tried a different power source?

Try setting Force Backup Booter and see if it makes a difference (b, then option 2 in console menu)

........... have you tried a different power source?....
This actually solved my problem!
I made a successful netinstall with 6.38.5.
Thanks, I owe you a favor.
To try with a different power supply didn't occurred to my mind.

But I'm wondering why:

I had issues with a 24V 1,5A powers source.
After your post I used 12V 1A.
Why the board had problems with the bigger power source?
RB433AH should work with up 28V, I think (Power jack (8-28V DC)).

You're welcome, glad it helped!

Probably because the power supply is defective. It happens more frequently than one may think.

Routerboards work with a really wide range of voltages (I consistently bring with me a mAP2n, which works from 8 to 57V, even a 9V battery is able to power it!)

What usually happens with defective power supplies is that they usually drop voltage abruptly as soon as some load is applied to the PSU, maybe that 24V psu drops below 8v or fluctuates heavily under load.
