CRS305-1G-4S+IN PoE In not working with Ubiquiti US-8-60W

Wed Feb 13, 2019 11:05 am

Hi,

I recently purchased a CRS305 switch with the intention of going 10GbE for part of my network (server, NAS and main desktop). To that end, everything works great!

I have one hiccup with the setup. My intention is to use the 1GbE port on the CRS305 as an uplink and PoE power to an upstream Ubiquiti US-8-60W switch. Initially, when I first received the CRS305 and set it all up last week, everything worked just fine. I had the CRS305 plugged into port 5 of the US-8-60W (ports 5-8 are PoE capable). The only PoE device attached to the US-8-60W is an Ubiquiti AP (UniFi HD) which is connected to port 8. I am using SwitchOS. Both switches have the latest firmware.

Recently, I unplugged the devices to do some cable management and upon re-plugging everything back in (same setup as before), the CRS305 will not power on via PoE from the US-8-60W. I tried rebooting the US-8-60W, trying different ports and different cables (Cat5e and Cat6a) to no avail. Obviously, the switch powers on and works just fine using the AC adapter. It will also work using a Ubiquiti PoE injector (48V, 0.5A)...but not the US-8-60W.

I am at a lost as to why it initially worked, but will not anymore. Any one have any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm in the same boat as you, however with one odd situation.

Initially out of the box I had to use the AC adapter. I upgraded the firmware on the MikroTik unit to 6.43.8 (I think?) and the switch was able to be powered by the US-8-60w with two DAC cables and a fiber sfp+ module installed.

I upgraded all of my firmware (MikroTik, UniFi) and since then I can no longer power it over the POE IN port. Currently using a random DC power supply I have as I have no idea where the MikroTik one is now. I'd love to be able to get this resolved, but it may be a UniFi issue rather than a MikroTik issue.

Sounds like maybe you are using active dac cables and don't have enough wattage with the dac installed to boot. Devices normally need a lot of power for the initial boot (charging capacitors and boot straping), but once running power reduces and you can add additional loads (the dacs). It's possible that if the ports start in a powered down mode and is turning them on too soon in the boot sequence, it goes over amperage and the voltage drops and crashes the cpu/chips locking up. In this case it might be possible for a firmware update to fix it by just adding a delay.

I have never tried to run a sfp switch with just poe, some of those active sfp modules just need too much power. Might be fine for backup power though as long as there is not too much load on the poe.

Just my .02 cents...

Has anyone received any advice from Mikrotik on this?
I have supported two support request with no response, and am seeing the exact same thing, however with the CRS309, and a 16 port UniFi PoE switch.

I do believe however, that putting one of the UniFi ports into passive 24V poe mode, it works ok, but not with poe+ (802.3af/at).
I have 2x DAC cables (not active as far as I know) and 1x Copper transciever. I have not yet tried booting without cables attached.

Still nothing on this issue?

Very frustrating for me, as one of the main reasons I purchased my switch for my designed deployment, was the PoE capability!

Support ticket for me suggested an RMA, but no option of advanced replacement.
Hoping more traction in this post will get them to investigate further and hopefully resolved with a firmware update!

[…] the CRS305 will not power on via PoE from the US-8-60W […]
[…] work using a Ubiquiti PoE injector (48V, 0.5A) […]
So?
The problem is on US-8-60W, it's not a MikroTik problem, contact Ubiquiti support.
