wAP LTE and LHG LTE - Very bad LTE performance

Mon Jan 27, 2020 10:27 pm

I must start with saying that I am a big fan of Mikrotik products. I have experience with hAP, wAP, LHG, RB, CRS among other products. I have set up 20 km wireless links with the LHG5, which works flawlessly.

I do however have one issue with some products, and the common problem is the Mikrotik R11... miniPCI cards installed in the LHG LTE and the wAP LTE. I have never managed to gain any kind of performance (stability and speed) with these. If I manage to get any kind of LTE connection, it is slow, unstable and has terrible ping times.

The last time I tried a wAP LTE I failed miserably. I ordered a LHG LTE, but is still worked terribly. Yes, the cellular conditions at that site are not good at all, but a ZTE MF910 mini LTE router put inside the building (the wAP and LHG were installed outside) outperformed the Mikrotik products by far.

I then replaced the 4G/LTE miniPCI card in the LHG with a Huawei ME909s-120, and immediately got better performance (stable ping times, stable connection, high speed).

On another site (my home), I installed a wAP LTE with two external antennas (Iskra P-58 L700). Performance was terrible until I installed a Huawei miniPCI card.

I know I'm not the only one experience terrible performance with these products, which is bad. I really like Mikrotik products, and this cannot be good for Mikrotik's reputation. I think the wAP LTE and LHG LTE should be available with an empty miniPCE slot to enable the buyer to select a miniPCI module on his/her own. In fact, I believe that they should never be sold equipped with the Mikrotik 4G/LTE modules.

It's unlikely a single modem from Mikrotik will suit the needs of everyone in every country. Personally I order the SXTR and LHGR (The ones without an included modem) I then put in the desired modem based on the location or needs and they work flawlessly.

Hi, here in Italy both WAP LTE and LHG LTE with standard Mikrotik modem work very well.
I reached stable 95-100 Mbits data transfer without problem (on 20Mhz B3).
Perhaps is a problem of your country's mobile operator.

What is the 4G coverage where these have been installed? The ones I had problems with were installed in difficult areas. The Huawei 4G boards show RSSI around -80 and SINR around 1-4.

Maybe so. The operator in use (Telenor) use frequency bands 20, 8, 3, 38 for LTE. The LHG LTE Kit supports all of these.
The Huawei ME909s-120 supports 20, 8 and 3 (not 38). It still works better. Is there something else to look for?

Which firmware are you running in your R11e-LTE card? I've installed several wAP LTE routers and had very poor performance until I upgraded to firmware v13, that version fixed the issues for me (my telco provider is Vodafone in Spain)

Honestly, I have no idea. I did not even know I could upgrade the firmware. How do I do that? Is there a guide somewhere?
This would of course be great news if it worked! :)

To check if an update is available:
[admin@MikroTik] > /interface lte firmware-upgrade lte1
  installed: MikroTik_CP_2.160.000_v011
     latest: MikroTik_CP_2.160.000_v013
I would advise to use my script unattended-lte-firmware-upgrade.
Just copy and paste into a terminal, then be patient and wait until the firmware is updated.

But keep in mind that you can not do the upgrade via LTE this way. A stable management connection is required.

@eworm, thank you for making the modem firmware upgrade script. It seems to work, but looks like my modem has some kind of issue. I executed your script twice. Hopefully, this info can shed some light into why R11e-LTE-US modem is not upgrading.

Re: wAP LTE and LHG LTE - Very bad LTE performance

Thu Jan 30, 2020 2:54 am

Sometimes the basestation that your device connects have bad thoughput for many clients connected or simply the trunk of the basestation have low thoughput (if the connection is though VDSL or MMOO normally this happens). Check if with your cellphone you have the same results that using MikroTik. Make sure that the signal levels are good (-100 dbm or plus in RSRP).

Regards.

To check if an update is available:
[admin@MikroTik] > /interface lte firmware-upgrade lte1
  installed: MikroTik_CP_2.160.000_v011
     latest: MikroTik_CP_2.160.000_v013
I would advise to use my script unattended-lte-firmware-upgrade.
Just copy and paste into a terminal, then be patient and wait until the firmware is updated.
Thank you. It would be very interesting to make a comparison before and after upgrading. I have a wAP LTE which is not in use.
For the sake of making a good comparison. What should I measure in terms of performance before and after the upgrade?

But keep in mind that you can not do the upgrade via LTE this way. A stable management connection is required.
It does upgrade over LTE connection. Never had issues so far.

RSRP, avg. of few speedtest's, sinr <-- all those on different BAND's.
That way you know what speed and signal's you have on what band per different firmware. This should be fine for you.

In my case I have R11e-LTE6_V022_085TB@6.47beta24 with that I do additional test like - how long works ca-band, that ca-band give me additional speed or/and stability. I check that in 3G too. That CellLock works in 3G and/or LTE and cell-monitor works and show correct or not data. I go near to my eNB and do a speedtest per few ISP. All this go into excel table and are feedback to MikroTik support team.
