x86 Hardware.?

Sun Feb 09, 2020 6:00 pm

Hello Peoples...
Using Mikrotik products from the last 5+ years.
Firstly used RouterOS on x86 Hardware(intel i3,2gb ram, ) but after 2 years facing issue in bandwidth distribution, so migrated to ccr1009.
now having the same issue of bandwidth & CPU usage, thinking to upgrade.
Newer CCR will be a good option or Xeon 8 core with 8 gigs of RAM & SSD will beat the CCR 1016 or 1036.

x86 users please give some inputs regarding your hardware with CPU usage & bandwidth utilization.

X86 is outdated at this moment, look for CHR if you don’t have the time to wait for ROS 7

You really have to experiment with different hardware to find cards that are natively supported by x86 version. Intel LAN/SFP+ cards seems to work, but one model may work and other slightly different may not. Have to experiment. No support for newer SATA or RAID controllers and many other stuff, glad we can boot ROS from USB stick, that seems to work on pretty much any hardware. Also if you buy ROS license for USB stick, it will not be locked to a specific machine, you can try multiple servers until you find a best performing one for your needs.

But it's all worth it, running CHR just sucks, hypervisor always wastes some CPU power. Native ROS is the best for best performance.

no, license is directly bound to the hard drive. If you format it, it will be lost forever!
Cloning it to a new drive will also not work, that invalidates the license.
If you want to use new drive, you have to buy a new ROS license.
