Feature Request: RFC3021 /31 point-to-point support in v7

Fri Apr 03, 2020 6:33 pm

I know /31 RFC3021 isn't currently supported, but as we run out of IPv4 space, it sure would be nice to have working OSPF with /31. Maybe v7 will open the doors to making this happen.
/31 is not supported.. You should use /32 or /30
Just a warning on using two /32 addresses as a workaround for the /31 problem.

We've had a number of problems with OSPF stability using this approach if you're planning on using OSPF for a dynamic routing protocol.

I don't disagree that /31 would be useful but i'd rather see the time spent on improving IPv6 support. The number of IPv6 networks we've been doing consulting work on in the last 12 months has skyrocketed. Once dual stack is in place, IPv4 public requirements don't disappear but are certainly diminished.

The only time you really need public IPv4 between routers is when handing off to another ASN, Customer, etc. IPv4 between routers internal to an ASN that would otherwise be public can easily be RFC6598 IP space from 100.64.0.0/10. We've deployed ISP, DC and Enterprise networks around the world with this space successfully for the last 10 years.

Google HQ uses it for campus, Century Link uses it for MPLS L3VPN assginments, TailScale uses it for VPN address assignments.

It's pretty much the new RFC1918. :D

MikroTik should be aware of the following

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2020/03/0 ... ment_ipv6/

The site is currently down .... something wrong with the UK but it will be up soon

I agree. IPv4 as a service over a IPv6 network is possible the future.

I thought I had read somewhere that this was already added in v7? I haven't tested it to see whether or not that is the case.

Does anyone know if /31 can be made to work?

I have a friend trying to setup a 2216 with BGP across a /31 peering and is not making progress.

No /31 is not supported even in ROS v7.
If remote peer have /31 address set then on MT side you can set up /32 it will work.

I'm running 7.4.1 on a pair of routers and they can communicate via a /31 network, however OSPF will not function over the /31. The routers are caught in ExStart and never move on. If I switch to a /30 network, OSPF works immediately, thus ruling out other issues.

I'm aware of the suggested /32 work around mentioned a number of threads, but it appears to have issues with OSPF stability.

Has there been any word from Mikrotik if this will be addressed?

i think is better for MikroTik to focus on ipv6, and transition mechanisms than this tiny thing
