Howto wanted - block advertisement like Youtube

Wed Dec 09, 2020 8:49 am

Hello,

I would like to ask you for your support.

Goal:

to block advertisement content for the connected devices using only the MikroTik router running OS 6. No Pi-hole, no additional software.

For the PC I am using uBlock Origin.

Adguard-DNS was not successful.

I need this solution for the appliances like Smart TV.

I have checked the forum for such a solution but was not able to find it.

How would I do this best and with as simple as possible a solution?

Thank you

Buy Youtube premium.

What you are asking is not possible and totally unrelated to Mikrotik.

Hi,

well, YT premium sounds obvious enough.

I am still wondering given all the options of the OS why this should be so hard to do.

I am trying to be helpful, but you clearly did not do enough research on your own. This is very wide topic on the internet, especially on the pi-hole forums. See https://discourse.pi-hole.net/t/how-do- ... outube/253 because it explains why adblocking using DNS method does not impact some sites, and one of them is youtube.

TL;DR You can't block ads on YouTube with Mikrotik.

Asking for general adblocking on your LAN - again you can't do it with Mikrotik. You need pi-hole for it, and you likely need another server where you host such dns server.

There are public pihole instances, but it's up to you whether to trust them or not.

Point taken :-)

I will check for the options.

I am curious how uBlock Origin is able to do it in the browser...

Ads have been around for over 20 years on the web, just like the methods to block them. As public reliance on the web has skyrocketed through free services, so has the need for monetization through ads to provide those services (do you work for free?). Hence, Google is working very hard to maintain its ad revenue by forcing all of us to view ads (you'd have few content creators if they couldn't get their share as well). Pi-hole is a good solution if you can't block ads at a client level, but it can't block all ads (it's a DNS server, not a rendering engine). Like a host file, it's much better than nothing. Paying is the only option for YT in your case.

uBlock works at the browser level when rendering a page.

Hi,

I don't own MikroTik hardware, yet. And I guess it's not possible to make

https://github.com/iv-org/invidious

running on such a "slow" hardware, but I just wanted to mention it.
It's basically a front-end for YouTube and with that you get rid of ads.

https://invidious.tube/feed/popular
https://invidious.xyz/

are public installations, they're not always up-to-date and it also looks as some content (latest DAZN football videos) isn't available at all :/
But maybe that can be tweaked if you have your own installation.

Greetings,
schotter
