Seamless roaming

Wed Dec 09, 2020 1:57 pm

Hello
Is there a seamless roaming supported by any chance? I don't mean same SSID, this setup causes short interruptions when you roam between 2 AP. True roaming like TPLINK Deco support(802.11r/v/k), where you roam between AP like being in GSM network and no single data interrupt is noticed as long u stay in range of any AP's.

I'm not a wireless expert but from reading the forums i understand that the devices dictate how roaming works in most cases.
I have a 4 floors building with mikrotik wireless ap's, capsman and vlans for office/guests and the last time i tested a whatsup conversation while walking on all floors i didnt noticed any interruption and the conversation was crystal clear.

802.11r/k/v is not seamless either and it's nothing like GSM. Wifi roaming always causes short interruptions, 802.11r/k just help in shortening those.

MT started to implement r/k/v stuff in the newer wave2 wireless driver (which only support ac wireless chips and newer and has some insane requirements about flash disk and RAM, not many devices conform to requirements). No support in CAPsMAN yet, so the better roaming only works between radios in same AP (e.g. between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). No support in legacy wireless driver either so it seems it'll take some more time before we start to roam seamlessly.

Still no support for roaming with multiple routers ?
I don't expect to work it on old ones, but with like new ones MikroTik hAP ax3 , any chance ?

Theres something in changelog:
*) wifiwave2 - added initial CAPsMAN support (only compatible with wifiwave2 interfaces) (CLI only);
*) wifiwave2 - added interworking/Hotspot 2.0 support (CLI only);

We're not there yet. I'm sure when this gets implemented, it'll be mentioned in list of changes with huge letters.

We use another vendor which supports r/k/v but we had to disable this whole "seamless" stuff, because a lot end-devices were unable to connect. In opinion, dont use it, it sounds good, but only in a 100% controlled enviroment, like a company network where only tested deviced are connected too.

802.11v is probably the only protocol that you can enable blindly without testing anything. If you turn on 802.11k, you need to experiment with the Quiet IE parameter, otherwise some Intel Clients will not be able to connect. Lastly, 802.11r is a wildcard and some older clients might have problems even associating with it enabled. The strategy should be to get all clients associated with nothing enabled and slowly enable protocols with your tested clients.

I guess this will be the most wanted feature after releasing wifi 6 capable devices... Waiting for this for few years already :)
