how to setup ipv6 multihoming with bgp ?

Mon Sep 06, 2021 5:40 pm

I’m looking for some guidance on how to setup IPV6 multihoming with BGP ?the wiki[1] is about ipv4 and i don’t think we have routing policy with ipv6.

Policy routing is not mandatory to have BGP multihoming.

It might be helpful to discuss who your upstream providers are and what size prefix you have for IPv6.

For example do they have traffic engineering communities available?

right sorry for the lack of details.

It’basically multi homing over 2 links with one ISP.

2 links connected to one 1 ISP using 2 different ISPs. 1 link is using a direct internet connection to the isp over PPPOE and the other is using a GRE tunnel. on each CCR2004 I have an interneal As usinGP session to collect a /48 ipv6 and 2 /29 IPv4.

Note sexond ISP also provide me a /29 IPv4 and a /56 IPv6.

So both /48 and /56 prefixes typically mean that you have provider-dependent (PD) IPv6 space and not a provider-independent (PI) IPv6 prefix.

In order to use the two prefixes you already have, you would need every host to use an address from each range.

Have you contacted your RIR to apply for a PI prefix and ASN for BGP peering?

mmm no I should probably do it. i can have ebgp session to my first isp using a gre tunnel for the /48 though. But what would be the next step if i and an independant prefix?

The best way to start is to apply for an ASN and an IPv6 prefix with your Regional Internet Registry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_ ... t_registry). You can sign up for an account at the RIR webpage and most of them have FAQ guides to help you begin the process.

ARIN which covers North America has a good overview:

OK . I am taking care about that. My question is once I have setup a bgp session on each router, what would be the configuration steps to look to for example having 1 prefix used by a department and another by another department without NAT? To have something like this:

* Prefix A -> Departtment A via router 1 failover on router 2
* Prefix B -> Department B via router 2 failover on router 1

Should I setup 2 prefix for a department, 1 for each router and dispatch it? Or should I use another router in between to take care of it?

Any hint/link is welcome :)
