GPON SFP+ 3FE46541AA Negotiating Incorrect Link Speed

Sat Sep 18, 2021 9:10 am

Hi,

My ISP provides a SFP+ GPON ONT that I currently use with my CSS326-24G-2S+ switch.
This link is stable and working, however is only negotiating a 1gb link.

The SFP module does have the ability to negotiate the full GPON spec bandwidth of 2.488gbps rx/1.244gbps tx.

My ISP is now offering 1.5gbps but I cannot upgrade due to the negotiation of the current speed. Is there any way I can force a 2.5gbps link or can a firmware update be provided?

Are you sure the ONT itself supports 2.5gbit Ethernet?

There is mention of a fix for 2.5 and 5gbit SFP+ modes for CRS312, but nothing specific about CSS326, so one would assume it supports those already.

What's new in v2.13:
CRS312: fixed 2.5G & 5G modes;

I would check the ONT capabilities with the provider, personally.

Secondly, you should think yourself lucky you have anything near 1gbit already.

Some of us are stuck with 80mbit and below (UK FTTC).

FTTP is on the way... but man it seems crazy to be dissatisfied with 1gbit internetz. :)

I'm in exactly the same situation with the RB5009.

I use the SFP+ port for the internet connection with my ISP provided GPON (ALCATELLUCENT 3FE46541AA).

I get a solid connection when I set the SFP to 1Gbps but it won't connect when I set it to Auto Negotiate.

I am hoping that this will be addressed in time.

Can CSS610-8G-2S+ or CSS326-24G-2S or CRS305-1G-4S+ negotiate 2.5gbps with these GPON SFP sticks ?

Wrong for these SoC SFP ONTs, they can run their MII at 2.5gbps if you set eth mode to 6 in riitool in their console
but the other side has to support 2.5gbps rate too, which is why the question

@BettyRNorahDeniels
GPON (Gigbabit Passive Optical Network) SFPs in general are different to normal optical transceivers. GPON is a shared medium and requires special encription and time sliceing for media access. GPON SFPs conatain local intelligence handling all this low level stuff autonomiously while appearing as a normal SFP+ transceiver towards to host.

@adamskalicky
I have two RB5009 running with GPON SFPs (OEM'd by the ISP, dont know the actual brand). If the GPON SFP is configured to run 2.5GB on the host XMII using a special tool, I have to disable autoneg on sfp-sfpplus1 and fix the rate to 2.5GB.
This works, except the 2.5GB reliability issues RB5009 has in general with ROS 7.1.1. But this is a different issue not related to spcific SFPs.

I dont know the CSS326-24G-2S+. If WebUI nor CLI provides an option to fix SFP+ rate to 2.5GB, I'm afraid your out of luck until MT provides a SwOS update allowing it.
The specs does only mention 1G and 10G support for SFP+ ports. So it is possible the HW can not do 2.5GB at all. (2.5G and 5G are more recent standards, released later than 10G ).

Hi,

do you guys know how to decode the MAC address of this Acaltell Lucent ONT? I know that the serial number is the mac and it is show with the name of the vendor like ALCLF1234567.

Another (maybe silly) question: how the console of these ONTs are accessed? Via the fiber port for remote provision, or locally through the host system?

Thanks
