Upgrade problems with CCR 1009

Fri Sep 24, 2021 1:14 pm

Hi,
I have a CCR 1009-8G-15-15+ which is currently at RouterOS v6.42.4 (stable).
I would like to upgrade so that I can set up a VPN using IKEv2 EAP which I understand requires at least: RouterOS: v6.45.2

When I attempt the upgrade to the latest stable version (6.48.4) from the web managements interface, I am able to download the package, but when I restart the Router, the installed version is the same (v6.42.4) and the logs show:
"can not install multicast-6.42.4: it is not made for tile, but for mips"

It would be great if somebody could explain what this error means (wrong hardware?) and if there is any way I can upgrade despite this issue.
Is there perhaps a way to choose a compatible version I can upgrade to later than v6.45.2?

Many thanks in advance!!!

I found an old package for the wrong hardware in the files folder that was obviously causing the problem at reboot.
I removed this file and now everything is working.
Upgrade ran.

In Winbox do this.....

"System"
"Packages"
"Check for updates"

This will populate your 1009 to the latest upgrade packages.
After this is done go to.....

"System" "RouterBOARD"
"Upgrade"
If all goes well you will have all the correct packages and the RouterBOARD updated.

Hope this helps.

Wow...ancient RouterOS version topic...had to check if the first post was from long time ago or not...

Can you please explain why you you are running such an old version of RouterOS? Has this device never been maintained?
Be aware that it might be compromised if it was conencted to the Internet. Just to be sure...the web management is only available on the LAN site?

It looks like you selected the incorrect chip architecture (mipsbe instead of tile). That wont work (as you hopefully understand).
You might want to consider running the LTS version: https://download.mikrotik.com/routeros/ ... .47.10.npk

Still...why?

Hi guys,
thanks for the responses.

I removed this file and now everything is working.
Upgrade ran.
(I tried to post this last week but it seems the comment was waiting to be approved)

'Why so old...'
I just inherited the router. I bought a big old server cabinet on eBay and when I picked it up it had the MikroTik and a Cisco switch still inside, the guy threw them in for another 50 Euro.
I have been learning to use it for the last few weeks... I have now set up a VPN and am working on setting up some VLANs next... all good fun, and its a long time since I played around with hardware.

Cheers
Toby

Okay...makes sense. Hope you will follow my advice on the version. And if it was connected to the Internet, wipe your configuration. And at last...enjoy, it is a great device!

I did a factory reset when I got it, but interestingly it did not delete what was in the 'files' folder.
It was not connected to the internet until I upgraded.

Do I still need to wipe it and start again?

the only right way to do a factory reset is a netinstall ...

better safe than sorry

Yes. Look up Netinstall - this completely wipes any garbage left and leaves you a clean installation to start with.
