Metal 52 ac and CarBattery

Mon Oct 04, 2021 1:57 pm

Hi.
What do you think, if the mikrotik meta 52AC would work properly if we connect it to a car battery (it is a delivery vehicle, i.e. a 24V battery)? I mean mainly the voltage differences during car operation, when the car is running and battery is charging, the voltage increases, when it is stationary, the battery discharges, so the voltage decreases, etc.,voltage generally is not constant.

I've run them on 24 volt vehicle systems with good results. If you want to be sure and have a stable system you should use a DC to DC regulator such as this one from Tycon Power .

For all Solar or automotive installations, aka Battery-Operation

0. Fuses / Current limitation
- To protect wiring, Battery and Co. in case of an electrical Fault.

1. Deep discharge / undervoltage protection
- To protect and extend the life of your Battery
- To be able to Start your Car or Truck after an extended period of time =)

2. Voltage regulator
- To ensure a stable system*

I have powered Mikrotik-Devices directly in the the past, without any problems.
The Devices have a wide range of Voltages and are quite stable.
But for everything outside a Lab-Enviroment, i concure with @w32pamela and recommend a Voltage regulator.

All poe in control chips are already equipped with a dc regulator so in general there is no need for an extra one as long as the supply voltage is kept within the specs. But I can see a need for an external unit that for example brings galvanic isolation, triggering alarms not to drain the power source or to increase the supply voltage.
