hEX PoE 802.3af/at Question (RB960PGS)

Fri Oct 08, 2021 3:47 pm

I'm looking at the hEX PoE (RB960PGS) for its 4x 802.3af/at-out ports (ether2-ether5).

My question is: can it supply 802.3at out on all 4 ports advertised? If so, do I need to use the DC adapter or passive POE injector (or will either work)?

I ask because 802.3at can deliver up to 25.5w, while the maximum power consumption is listed as 54w, so it would seem it can only deliver 802.3at on up to two ports at best. The devices currently in use are 2 Ruckus R510 APs (802.3af) and 1 Ruckus H510 (802.3at), but the R510s are likely to be upgraded in the future (in a year or two), in which case I need at least 3x 802.3at.

And though 802.3at devices won't always hit the max (an 802.3at Ruckus R610 I have at home on a POE switch is currently sipping just 4.86w), I'd rather not find out the hard way the limits of the device. Especially since even though it can draw 54w, the device itself consumes power, so that 54w is not entirely available for POE (and the page only says the amperage available for POE, which for some reason is only 450mA with 30-57V input but 1A with 18-30V).

I'd like to upgrade the current setup (of 3 802.3af/at injectors) but was considering the hEX PoE as a cheaper alternative to the CRS112-8P-4S-IN (max power consumption 160w, theoretical max of 6 802.3at devices at full draw). Will the hEX PoE be able to provide the power needed, or should I just bite the bullet on the CRS112?
