Bricked RB5009 trying 7.1RC6

Wed Nov 10, 2021 2:23 pm

Hi,

I just got my brand new RB5009. After upgrading to 7.1RC6 via winbox, it booted normally.
I could only access it once more via Winbox, then it was just not accessible. Webfig did not work either.
Initially winbox could see the rb5009, but where was no answer from it (in wireshark).
Then I pressed reset during power on. Again it booted OK, I could see STP and ARB in wireshark, but was not able to connect to it.
Also it did not show up in Winbox anymore.

So I tried netinstall:
  • Downloaded netinstall 7.1rc6 for Linux
  • Downloaded routeros arm64

sudo ./netinstall-7.1rc6 -a 192.168.88.2 routeros-7.1rc6-arm64.npk
Using server IP: 192.168.88.20
Starting PXE server
Waiting for RouterBOARD...
PXE client: DC:2C:6E:2D:1B:89
Sending image: arm64
TFTP error not defined: 0xffbe40f4
TFTP timeout
I've also got a wireshark capture.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Chris

I ran into the same problem using Linux with a CCR2004. Was working smoothly before.

The only solution I found was using a Windows 10 PC, with fixed IP 192.168.88.2 set to the ethernet interface, WLAN disabled and the netboot client IP set to 192.168.88.199.
Also it was essential that a switch was connected between the Windows PC and the netboot client. Before it also worked directly connected.
Additionally I disabled all firewalls on Windows.

Re: Bricked RB5009 trying 7.1RC6  [SOLVED]

Thanks for your reply. I used Linux before to fix a failed update on my hap ac2. So Linux works fine for that, and besides I don't have any Windows box to try it out.
Yes disabling firewalls is an important part.

I played a bit around, and may be I just pressed the reset button not too long and short during power-up.
This time I might have hit the config reset, as I could see the rb5009 doing dhcp request (my previous config?).
So I plugged it into the other network, the one that has a dhcp server. It got 192.168.10.12.

Winbox however could find it this time: OS 7.1rc6, IP=192.168.88.1 ! how is that working?
Winbox is seeing a differnt IP, than the one from my DHCP server?

Ah! If the board has made a configuration reset, it could be be back in router mode: WAN Port has IP 192.168.88.1, LAN got it from DHCP.
So I plugged it into the other network port on the PC again, the one with 192.168.88.0/24 network:
And It is working again! Hurray!

Open questions:
  • TFTP Error is still concerning
  • I find the different reset modes, extremely difficult to access and distinguish: How long total press, which LEDs are supposed to blink or stop blinking?
  • Which version of routeros works on which HW? Gui lets me select routeros 6.x for the rb5009.
  • Arm64 Version was a guess, because of HW, RB5009 is not mentioned in download list for Arm64.
