No networks on wlan1's scan list

Fri Nov 26, 2021 1:53 pm

Hi,
I just got my Omnitik 5ac and have strange issue... I cannot see any network on wifi scan list (wlan1).
The configuration is the default one - just as came with wlan1 bridged with ether2-5.
I have changed bridge's ip, added wifi security profile to match AP settings I would like to connect to, changed country and changed device password.
Please look bellow more details.
Have no clue why I cannot scan any wifi networks.
Could I ask for help on this matter please?
Thanks.

What frequencies are the intended access-points transmitting at? Poland wireless country profile combined with outdoor installation will operate within 5490-5710Mhz frequencies

Thanks for your reply. The situation has changed a little bit.
I was able to scan/configure Huawei AP at 5GHz (tested on channel 36 - 5180MHz and and channel 100 - 5500MHz), however I am still NOT able to scan D-LINK AP (also tested on these two channels).

I wait for another Mikrotik device - I expect it will come tomorrow - and I will update this post with more information as soon as I got it installed/configured.

To fasten the scanning process, you can temporary change scan-list from default to 5500 when running 5500Mhz on the access-points. Also, are you able to see D-LINK with running 5500Mhz from other device (mobile etc..) scans?

Yes, I am. I am working on this device right now on laptop and mobiles.
It works on channel 100 at the moment. I can see its parameters on WiFi Monitor app (5500MHz CH.100 80Mhz WPA3/WPA2/WPA)... but still not able to see it on Mikrotik :(

OK, I have found some solution. After 10+ tests it appeared that DLink AP was visible with the following settings:

Frequency mode: regulatory-domain
Country: etsi1
Installation: any

Could someone explain, please why is that? Why it does not work on regulatory-domain/poland/outdoor settings?

On what frequency did the connection establish with etsi + any settings?

You can check what channels are accessable with Country and Installation setting
Use "/interface wireless info country-list" for a list of possible countries
"/interface wireless info country-info <country>" for the channel list
See also: viewtopic.php?t=180706
I think country=ETSI is better than "ETSI 1"

Omnitik can only be used with installation=Outdoor. It will only use non-indoor frequencies. (So in ETSI/poland 5180-5320 cannot be used.)
Be aware of DFS delays !!! Can be up to 10 minutes.

Besides "Scan", using "Snooper" is a way to look around in the environment, it will reveal AP and client.

Also add in Logging "Topics=wireless" , and see the detected beacons from the AP's in the log, when trying to connect.
The beacon content could tell you why you do not use an AP (e.g. basic rates, supported rates).

Thanks for your reply.
Channels from my OmniTik for Poland are as follow:

ranges: 2402-2482/b,g,gn20,gn40(20dBm)
2417-2457/g-turbo(20dBm)
5170-5250/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(23dBm)/passive,indoor
5170-5330/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(20dBm)/dfs,passive,indoor
5250-5330/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(20dBm)/dfs,passive,indoor
5490-5710/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(27dBm)/dfs,passive
5190-5310/a-turbo(20dBm)/dfs
5180-5300/a-turbo(20dBm)/dfs
5520-5680/a-turbo(27dBm)/dfs,passive
5510-5670/a-turbo(27dBm)/dfs,passive
902-927/b,g,g-turbo,gn20,gn40(30dBm)

I'm guessing these 5490-5710/a,an20,an40,ac20,ac40,ac80,ac160,ac80+80(27dBm)/dfs,passive I should use, right?
Now, I'm a bit confused, because I have changed settings to Frequency mode: regulatory-domain/Country: Poland/Installation: outdoor and it works!
Yesterday I have changed the channels from 36 to 100 (my router Huawei works on 36 now - and I cannot see it - but this is not an issue).
Possibly, I made the changes to fast...

I'll let it work as it is for a few hours and will see that the end result will be.

There is one more thing I would like to change... Tx Power.
I would like to limit it as much as possible while working indoors...
I set the Tx Power Mode = 'all rates fixed' and Tx Power = 3 in Tx Power tab of wlan1. Is this the right place to change it?

Thanks

OK this is correct. You need to do some math to find out what is the possible range.

Regulatory rules say 27 dBm
Two chains/antenna need a reduction of 3 dB -> 24 dBm
Antenna gain of Omnitik 5 ac is 7.5dBi, but ROS will use 8dBi -> 16 dBm (19 dBm should be the value in status if not set manually, status shows total power of both antenna)
16 dBm is the MAX radio power that will be used.

Setting to 3 dBm is a reduction of 13 dB compared to the MAX.
The overall emitted EIRP for this setup is 3+3+8dBm or 14dBm
This is a good low value. No feedback AFAIK in status field.

It sounds good... I will keep these settings then.
Thank you very much for your help.
